Saying diner is awkward is definitely an understatement. For one, I didn't even wanna go but Caleb picked me up and put me in a chair, before I could really protest. Of course I could've fought him off but I wasn't sure how Tris would feel if I damaged her brother.

Evelyn sat at the head of the table, with Four on the other side and me beside him, across from Tris. Beside Tris was Caleb obviously and now we sit in awkward silence. Nobody is eating.

Finally and thankfully, Tris decides to talk. "Someone please tell me what's going on here."

"Tobias and Jayline's father was very abusive. I knew the only way to escape him was to disappear completely." Evelyn explains. "Abnegation helped me fake my death. Anything to protect Marcus' image."

"But you just left them there alone with Marcus." Tris says.

"I was very young." Evelyn says.

I scoffed and shook my head. "Lame excuse."

"I reached out to them about a year ago," she continues, ignoring my comment. "I felt it was time to finally reconnect."

It was Four's turn to chuckle and shake his own head.

"I'm still your mother."

"No, our mother's dead. We went to her funeral when we were six." Four replies.

"And she wasn't trying to reconnect she was trying to use us. Like you are now." I accuse.

"What?" Tris frowns.

"She wants an army." Tobias explains, vaguely.

"An army?" Caleb asks Evelyn quietly.

"I want an alliance." Evelyn argues.

"No, what you want is revenge." Four spat.

"This isn't about me." Evelyn says. "It's about putting in end to a ruling that says one group is more deserving than the other. The city may be surrounded by a wall, but it doesn't have to be a prison."

"Did you read that on the back of a cereal box?" I ask, sarcastically.

"I think that's a bit extreme." Caleb says to Evelyn. "I mean the faction system isn't perfect but I it's hardly a prison."

"Let me guess, Erudite?"

"I was Erudite."

Evelyn nods with a small smile.

"Are you willing to kill Jeanine?" Tris asks.

"Absolutely." Evelyn replies without hesitation. "When I was married to Marcus I knew her well. I believe there is nothing she isn't capable of. But I think you already know that."

"Don't do that, don't act like you know us!" I snapped.

"You're my daughter, of course I know you." Evelyn says, calmly.

"Holy crap, please someone stick a knife in her back so she can at least get angry!"

Four gently kicks me under the table and that's a sign to calm down. If he can hold back, so can I. I sigh and sink slightly in my seat, too worn out to even fight my family.

"We can't trust her." Four says to Tris.

"Maybe she knows-" Tries tries to say.

"We're on the same side." Evelyn says. "Tris, I'm factionless because I don't fit into any one faction. You're Divergent because you belong to too many. But we're both a threat to Jeanine. My people are ready for war, if that's what it takes."
