***Tyrone's POV***

I feel bad for lying to Khai, but I can't just let him know that was really my uncle. I don't want him to know just how messed up my family is. I don't want him to know what happened to me.

"T-Tyrone... what are you doing home?"

I glance up when I see my dad, who seems like he's a little afraid for me.

"Does he not live here?" Khai asks with a little laugh. "Good morning to you too, Mr. Meyer."

I smile, grateful Khai is so talented at distracting.

"I suppose you don't have anymore pulled apart baby chickens... I'm kinda hungry."

My dad puts a hand to his forehead, and I just look at Khai, flabbergasted.

"We just had breakfast." I remind him.

"I know... but my body is telling me what my body is telling me."

"Khai?" My mom suddenly appears from her bedroom door, her hair messy. I can tell she just woke up.

She smiles at him, and Khai runs up to her to give her a hug.

I follow him and join in the hug, grateful that my mom seems okay.

Boris glances over at us, perhaps a hint of wanting to belong visible in his eyes. But then he just turns away to get a glass of water.

"How was last night?" Ricca asks.

"It was good." I say.

"We did almost die, though." Khai adds.

Of course.

He's just too honest sometimes.

"What?" Ricca looks at me, expecting me to explain myself.

"There was some lady acting really suspicious and Khai is convinced she was going to murder us." I pause. "To be honest I kinda thought so, too." I add quickly.

"But it's okay because a wolf attacked her." Khai explains.

I notice that my dad has an unexplained sudden interest in our conversation.

I study him curiously, a little hope rekindling in me that he cares about my well-being after all and doesn't wish I'd never been born.

Maybe he really is changing.

***Hazel's POV***

"I need to go thank him, Rass. He saved Khai's life last night and I can't just not say anything after that."

"Do you want me to go with?" Rassler asks.

"I think it's better if I go alone."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes. He wanted to kill you the last time he saw you." I remind him.

"Right..." Rassler sighs. "But you're injured." Both his face and his tone hold concern.

"I will be fine. And it's not like I'm running there on foot. I'm taking my car." I try to reassure him.

He nods, though I can tell he's still uneasy.

"Stay safe."

I'm flooded with memories as I pull into the driveway of the little house tucked neatly behind hedges and adorned with a few blue spruce trees.
