A bright light disrupted the seemingly endless sleep that had plagued the body of young Cortana. She looked around her to see machines beeping their calls of vital signs, wires and tubes attached to--well, her.

She groaned a bit as she tried to sit up. A nearby nurse gasped, seeing that she was awake. The nurse stuck her head out the doorway and into the corridor, yelling, " She's up!"

Cortana looked at the young nurse, eyes quizzical. She knew the woman was speaking, yet, she couldn't quite understand. She could not grasp what the woman was saying. Slowly, it came to her, language skills, comprehension, reading. She looked around, more aware now, reading different machines, documents, anything and everything. She wanted to absorb the information around her, manipulate it.

Cortana looked to the nurse and read her tag, Miatai. Her eyes wandered the room once more, Miatai came and smiled to her, laying her hand gently against Cortana's cool skin.

" Can you hear me?"

Cortana looked back to Miatai and nodded, "Yes. " She replied, though her voice had taken a slightly croaky tone. " Where am I?"

Miatai looked astonished that Cortana could even speak, let alone comprehend her question. She shook it off. " In the hospital, Miss, can we know your name?"

Cortana shook her head, " My name... " The only thing she didn't know yet. " What planet am I on?"

" Algolis II. "

Within three weeks, Cortana had been discharged, without demands to return. She had shown the highest quality brain functions for having been in her condition.

Cortana had been in a coma for five years. She had been found in the New Phoenix region and taken to Algolis for prime medical care, after showing no signs of recovery they almost pulled her life support. Just before they did so, her brain activity spiked and they decided to keep her alive indefinitely.

At every turn, Cortana continued to surprise the doctors. She could read faster than any of them could, she could created patterns flawlessly, and she even spoke other languages fluently and without pause. It was almost impossible. She was doing better after a coma than most people would in a regular life. Cortana showed a proficiency in math and physics, logic and literacy. Was there nothing she couldn't do?

The answer is yes. Cortana could not remember her own name. Certain sounds would return to her and she tried to place them together coherently. In the end, she came up with Cora. She knew it wasn't right, but it was all she had.

Cora.

Throughout those three weeks she learned to live with her new identity. Considering she had no memory of her past life, she was doing well with everything. She had been given an apartment to stay in, and money to support herself. First she had to buy clothes, and so in the charity clothes given to her by Miatai, she made her way into town.

Cora found a small boutique that seemed to have fairly low prices, and bought a soft blue sundress, a sort of digital design printed on it. She was immediately attracted to it and put up no hesitation to buy the outfit, along with a matching tea hat.

She smiled to herself at her great find and bought herself a small lunch, heading to the nearby park to eat.

After her lunchtime meal, Cora sat with a pleasant smile on her face, till her eyes wandered to far, and her breathing stopped.

There he was.
