Calum's POV:
I don't know why Maya came with me, we were such jerks to her that one day. Usually you don't forgive someone who didn't apologize. But hey, I'm not one to judge.
"Look, I'm sorry for about the school mishap." I finally blurted out, breaking the silence.
"It's fine. Just don't do it again." Maya laughed and looked up at me. "So Luke told me one of you guys has a crush on me." She smirked. I raised an eyebrow and looked curiously at her.
"Is that so?"
"Indeed so."
"I'm not sure I've heard of this." I rubbed my chin between my index finger and thumb, nodding my head. Maya giggled from beside me and slapped my arm.
"I'm being serious."
"Fine. Its Mr.Pickles." I smirked at her and she crossed her arms. "Luke's stuffed penguin, duh." I pulled into the familiar parking lot and looked up at the tall building. "We're here." I laughed and got out of the car, locking it after getting the stuffed animals.
"Fine. I don't have to know anyways." She looked up at me and then looked towards the door. We walked in and I went straight to the elevator doors. Maya followed behind me and we got onto the small space and it started its way up towards the Pediactric's level. The silver doors seperated and I was met with the smell of medicine and latex. I smiled and walked down the long hallway of patients.
"Calum!"
"Cody! There's my little man!" I walked towards the small boy and he looked up at me with his light hazel irises and smiled.
"Hey Calum." His parents smiled at me and I smiled back and waved.
"Guess what I brought today for you." I smiled again towards Cody and he shrugged.
"A turtle! I know you don't have one of those." I handed him a purple turtle and he smiled.
"Nope! I have 12 of them!" He pointed towards the pile of stuffed animals in the corner and I laughed.
"You're right. I gotta stop spoiling you with stuffed animals." I fluffed his hair with my hand and smiled up at Maya.
"Okay buddy, we gotta go see your friends."
"Wait, I can walk with you!" He sat up exitedly and grabbed onto his IV pole. He threw his legs across the bed and stood up. I gasped and looked up at his parents. They were smiling and I saw tears forming in their eyes.
"So soon?"
"Yep. Even after 27 surgeries, I'm okay!" He pumped his fist into the air and burst into a fit of laughter. I smiled at his tiny fist and threw mine in the air too. He giggled and followed Maya and I out of his small hospital room. We walked around to different hospital rooms and gave a stuffed animal to each patient. Each one had a big smile on their faces when I gave it to them. Once we were done, we walked back to Cody's room.
"All done." I smiled as Cody climbed into his bed easily and sighed.
"Thank you. Really, for everything." Cody's mom rubbed my arm and I shrugged. All of a sudden, she started crying and her husband grasped her to his chest. I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion and her husband just pointed towards the door. I walked out into the long hall, the once happy couple and Maya following.
"H-He only has a f-few months." Cody's mom's voice crackled and she broke down.
"Oh my god. I-I'm so sorry." I didn't know what to say, what to do. For the six years of Cody's life, I always brought him plush animals and he'd smile and laugh. But then he was diagnosed with lung cancer. I had always known, I just didn't know it would be so soon for his time to come.
"We have to go." Maya saw that I was in shock so she practically dragged me out of their room. Once we were in the elevator, she hugged me tightly.
"I am so sorry. I know this is probably hard. It will be okay. Maybe the treatments will kick in or something." I know she was trying to help, but every suggestion she made I got madder.
"It is hard! Okay? He's like a little brother to me, and no the treatments won't kick in because all of his six years of living, they haven't kicked in. So no, he's not gonna get better and he's not gonna go play with the other kids on the swing set." I sighed in frustration and looked down at my worn out Vans. Maya was wearing the same. "I'm sorry. I just can't stand it. He's such a good kid. He doesn't deserve this." I looked up at her and a tear ran down her face. I put my hand up to wipe it away, but she shoved it away.
"No, maybe I was right. Maybe you are a jerk." She looked away and I took action without thinking.
I grabbed her face and pressed my lips against hers.
