Michael's POV

"Mr. Jackson...Mr. Jackson are you there?"

"Yes...I am....I am here..."

"Mr. Jackson I need you to come to the hospital right now. We need to operate your wife immediately and we need your signature."

I sigh aloud. She's alive...she's still fighting.

"I'll be there immediately!"

I simply throw a coat over my pajamas and put on my shoes. I will sign anything as long as it saves her life. All through the drive to the hospital, I kept praying. I prayed with everything inside me.

"God, please don't take my wife...don't take my Belinda...Don't leave our children without their mother...don't call her to You. Let her stay with me. Please..."

And I am sitting in the doctor's office and he has all kinds of papers around him, showing me this and that.

"Doctor...I don't understand anything. Please...speak in short, simple words."

"Simply put, the blood clot is shifted, and putting pressure on your wife's spine. We need to take it out now, at least part of it."

"Good, then I sign, do it!"

"You need to know the risks...you need to know what you sign."

"What risks?"

"I cannot tell exactly how badly your wife's spine was affected...the moment we suck out the blood clot, we need to put a brace to support the spine, then straighten it back in place. If there is the slightest injury...it will only grow worse."

"And for Belinda...what does it mean for my wife?"

"She may suffer from paralysis in the lower part of her body...on a permanent basis."

"Jesus Christ...are you telling me that Belinda can end up in a wheelchair???"

"It could happen."

"What if you don't operate?"

"Then it is absolutely unavoidable that she will remain paralyzed."

"Either way....she could...she may...."

"The final evaluation of your wife's case amounts to 75% risk of paralysis."

"75%...."

"This is the paper, sir. I will leave you here to think for a few moments, but please don't be late."

I look at this paper. Belinda's fate depends on my signature. I signed millions of papers all my life. Agreements, deals, autographs...But never was my signature so critical.

"God help us!" I say as I put my signature on that paper and walk out of the office to give it to the doctor.

I sit next to Joseph.

"What did that crook want?"

"He's not a crook. I know you dealt with this type of people all your life, but take it from me that not everyone is a crook. I had to sign an affidavit to let them operate Belinda."

"You shouldn't have signed! You sign, you can't sue them afterwards."

"If I didn't sign, they couldn't operate on her. And I don't want to sue anyone, Joseph, I just want my wife back, alright? Look...I need... I need a drink, dad. Bring me one of my Diet Coke cans, OK?"

"You wanna drink Coke??? I can get you something stronger."

"I keep wine in my special Diet Coke cans. You can get one for yourself, too. Just keep it quiet."
