Chapter 12
Kaelyn
Smoke was creeping through the gaps in the door, slowly filling the small room they were trapped in. One of them was furiously smashing at the door. She could see huge cracks appearing in the wood and she knew they would soon break in.
She backed away quickly. "Now what?" she shouted, looking around desperately.
"Just hang on a second." He moved to a corner of the room and began to peel at the wall.
"What the hell are you doing?" She knew the wallpaper was ugly, but was now really the time? She was beginning to panic. "They're getting in!" Why is he so fucking calm?!
Just as the door smashed open, James grabbed her hand and pulled her towards the wall. The peeled paint revealed a small stone door which he pushed open; stone steps spiralled from the door, deeper into the ground. He pushed her through and followed, slamming the door behind him and barring it. The beasts shrieked and began to attack the door, furious that they had escaped them once again.
They ran down together hearing the thuds from the beasts echoing in their ears.
"Turn left!" James shouted when the stairs eventually reached level ground and split. They burst through another door and emerged outside, spiralling down a small hill into a patch of snow. Kaelyn climbed back to her feet.
"Oh." Was all she could utter when she looked around. They were completely surrounded.
James drew his sword whilst she backed away slightly, back to the way they had just left.
Two rows of those demons circled them, moving silently towards them. They growled and slavered when she retreated, closing in even tighter.
"Hold her. Kill the other." The speaker emerged from the throng of beasts, holding something around his neck."That will be difficult. He holds an ancient relic from the ruins and possesses more power than you think."
James and Kaelyn froze when they heard the rumbling voice.
"What do I do?""Summon an Elder to do your bidding."
"Yes . . ." The man wrapped a bony hand around an amulet around his neck. The summoning amulet Kaelyn realised. With his other hand, he sliced the meaty section of his palm with an old dagger. His face twisted in pain when the amulet began to glow and turn red as the rivulet of blood from his palm disappeared. It had soaked into the pentacle dangling at the bottom of the amulet. He muttered a few words, too quiet for Kaelyn to hear and then the ground begun to shake violently.
James pulled her back and raised his sword.
The earth seemed to claw itself apart as something tore its way free from deep below them.
A roar resounded, beating at their ear drums and forcing them to cover their ears.
Slowly, a great beast emerged claws first, pulling at the soil to raise itself. It roared again and shook its great head which was entirely wreathed in flames, framed by huge curving horns. Great armour like scales covered its whole body aside from its belly. Chains hung around the great beast, unfettered and broken. It stepped forward and crushed two of the smaller demons beneath its great feet.
It moved slowly away from the great rift it had emerged from, just as Kaelyn stepped towards it.
