Chapter 2

"Woah," I shouted to Pride as we came to the small hole in the ground that lead to our meager hideout. " Slow down buddy."

Pride whinnied a agitated whiney as I slipped off his back. I couldn't blame him. He had to stay up here during the storm and was probably afraid the storm might come again. The landscape around our hideout consisted of brown grass, dirt, and a few trees. When we had come here before the storm to hide there had been tall, luscious, green grass and many trees. I tied him to a lonely tree near the hole and slipped his saddle off his sweaty back.

"I'll be back soon boy," I said giving him an affectionate pat "Raven will be back soon with some food for both of us." After rubbing his neck a little more, I trudged towards the hole. Carefully, I lowered Prides saddle down into the depths. Then I slipped down myself.

Our hideout was not the prettiest of its kind. Its walls, roof, and floor were made entirely of dirt. It was mostly dark except for the hole in the roof that lead to the surface and a small lamp that ran on oil. We had four large barrels along one wall. In each barrel was something different, oil, flour, salted meat, and water. All of the them were half full now. In the center of the room was a wooden table with four chairs around it. On the table there was a bucket for washing in. Along the wall farthest from the hole was four beds. Only two of them were slept in now.

I carefully lifted the washing bucket off the table and placed it on the ground. I took a rag out of it and began washing the table. Once I finished with that I went on to making the beds. Finally I heard the stomping of boots above my head.

"Story, are you there?" Raven's voice called down the hole.

"Yeah!" I responded."did you get food? I'm starving!" Then I remembered my big news. "Raven, I have something to tell you."

"Okay, Ill be right there. And yeah, I got a lot of food." A few minutes later three bulging sacks fell from the ceiling.

"Is that all food?" I asked in amazement. We had barely eaten at all in the past few days.

"Yeah, I found it in an abandoned house." Then Raven dropped down from the hole. Raven had brown hair like mine but his was always a little messy. His eyes were a rare bright green.

"Raven," I said suddenly becoming serious. "Listen, this is important. Other people still live. And they're staying on our property."
