Chapter 3

Ravens eyes bored into mine, a shocked expression on his face.

"How can you be sure?" He asked, his voice disbelieving.

"I went there earlier today to look for our other animals and they tried to shoot me."

"You saw them?"

"Well no, but they pointed the gun out of the door of our shack. I think it was Papas hunting gun." Raven looked away at that part. I knew why. He and Papa used to go hunting together but now, now Papa was gone and so was Mama, Sky, and Reagan. Reagan was our 10 year old sister and Sky was our 4 year old sister. They had been out getting something when the storm struck and we still can't find their bodies. I have nightmares every night. After a moment of grieving silence I decided to change the subject.

"So what kind of food did you find?" Raven was quiet for a moment before responding.

"Well," His voice cracked "I found some syrup, honey, spices, fruits, and a lot of bread."

"

Thats good. Did you find any apples?"

"Yeah, I got a lot of apples."

"All right. Ill go give one to Pride. Can you help me up?" The only way to get out of our hideout was to get on someone else's shoulders or to have someone pull you up from the surface.

"Sure." Raven responded. After a little difficulty and a lot of help, I hauled myself up.

"Hey Story, can you pull me up there to?" Raven asked from down in the hole.

"I can try but you're heavy." I was fourteen years old and on the smaller side. Raven was a strong, average sized, sixteen year old.

"You've done it before." Raven said.

"Okay, okay, I'll try." Much faster than I expected, Raven was standing next to me on the surface.

"Thanks Story." He said wiping his hands off on his pants. I walked over to Pride and held an apple up to nose.

"Here boy, I told you I'd bring you something to eat." Pride sniffed the apple suspiciously before taking the whole thing out of my hand and eating it in a matter of seconds. I laughed, happy to see him eating after going a few days without any food except for dead grass.

Later that night as we were having a dinner of bread and meat, Raven announced his big idea.

"Story, we have to go back to those people. We have to show them we're not enemies. We need their help to find other people who are still living."

"Kid, maybe you're talking about us?" Said a rough voice from the ceiling. There, sticking down from the hole in the roof was a pair of hands gripping a gun and pointing it at us.
