The wind howled across the empty stretch of highway as Erica Branson adjusted her grip on the steering wheel. The road stretched endlessly ahead, flanked by rolling hills that faded into the dusky horizon. She’d been driving for hours — chasing whispers, chasing ghosts.

For years, her mother’s final words had haunted her. “Find your brother. He’s alive.”

She had tried to ignore them once — tried to bury herself in work, in other people’s problems, anything that kept her from facing the hole that had always been there. But the truth had a way of resurfacing, even after all this time.

Now, she was finally done running.

A low hum from the passenger seat pulled her back to the present. Jonathan Depp — her unlikely ally — was flipping through a worn leather folder. He was older than she expected when they met a few days ago; his sharp blue eyes had softened over the years, but there was still a spark of mischief beneath the surface.

“You’re sure about this?” Jonathan asked, closing the folder. “If we’re right, and he’s really alive, that means whoever wanted him gone will come for you too.”

Erica didn’t hesitate. “I’ve lived most of my life in the dark, Jonathan. I’d rather face danger knowing the truth than stay safe living a lie.”

He studied her for a moment, then nodded. “You’ve got his stubbornness, that’s for sure.”

“His?” she asked, glancing at him.

Jonathan smiled faintly. “Kerian. Your brother. He was always the type who’d dive headfirst into a storm if he thought someone needed saving.” His voice grew distant for a moment. “When I heard about his death, something didn’t sit right. Too neat. Too quiet. And now… well, I trust my instincts more than official reports.”

Erica stared out at the passing fields, her heart heavy and hopeful all at once. “Then we find him. Before whoever’s hunting him gets there first.”

Jonathan leaned back, arms crossed. “I’ve got a few contacts left who owe me favors. If Kerian’s alive, he’s probably using a different name. But no matter how good he is at disappearing, everyone leaves a trail.”

“Then let’s follow it,” Erica said softly.

The headlights cut through the growing fog, casting long streaks of light ahead. Somewhere far down that road, her brother was alive — unaware that his past and his bloodline were coming back to find him.

And though she didn’t know it yet, every mile she drove brought her closer not only to him… but to the same danger that once tore their family apart.
