Across town, Jonathan tightened his grip on the steering wheel as Erica studied the coordinates glowing on the GPS.
“This is it,” Jonathan said. “The signal’s strong. He’s somewhere near the outskirts of Maple Ridge.”
Erica nodded, her mind already racing ahead. She’d spent the past few days tracking fragments of intel, piecing together what the enemy was planning. Every instinct screamed that they were running out of time.
“Something’s wrong,” she murmured.
Jonathan glanced at her. “What do you mean?”
She stared out the window, watching the landscape blur by. “I can feel it. They’re moving faster than we thought. And if I can feel it—”
“Kerian probably can too,” Jonathan finished for her, a hint of admiration in his tone.
Erica met his gaze. “He doesn’t even know I exist yet, Jonathan. But if he’s half as smart as I’ve heard, he’ll know someone’s coming.”
Jonathan smiled slightly. “You’re a lot like him, you know that?”
Her lips curved faintly, though her eyes stayed on the road. “Our mother made sure of that. She taught me everything she knew after she left his father. Said she wanted me to have the strength to survive no matter what.”
“And you did,” Jonathan said softly. “You’re not just surviving, Erica — you’re leading.”
A quiet moment passed between them — an unspoken connection that neither wanted to break.
Then Erica’s expression hardened again. “We need to warn him. If the people after him get there first…”
Jonathan nodded. “I’ll make the call.”
He pulled out his phone, scrolling until he found the number he’d never thought he’d use again — Kerian.
After a few tense rings, a voice answered.
“Jonathan?”
Kerian’s tone was wary, edged with recognition.
“Yeah, man. It’s me.” Jonathan hesitated for only a second. “Listen, I don’t have time to explain everything, but danger’s headed your way. I’ve got backup with me, and we’re closing in on your location now.”
Kerian’s silence stretched for a moment before he replied. “Who’s coming after me?”
“The same people you thought were gone,” Jonathan said grimly. “They found a way back — and they’re setting a trap. Stay alert.”
“Always am,” Kerian said. “Thanks for the heads up. See you soon.”
Jonathan hung up and exhaled slowly. “He’s ready.”
“Good,” Erica said, her hand instinctively brushing against the holster at her hip. “Because so are we.”

Back at Vivienne’s, Catalina’s pulse raced. She moved toward the door, but a shadow appeared in the hallway — tall, broad-shouldered, and completely unfamiliar.
“Who are you?” Catalina demanded, her voice trembling just slightly.
The man smiled faintly. “Just someone who’s been waiting for you.”
Before she could react, two more figures stepped into view.
And for the first time in her life, Catalina truly felt afraid.
