Harry
Shït. I can't believe I forgot it was my mums birthday. I mean, I've remembered every year since I moved out, but I was just plain stupid this year. By the time I get that bloody flower bouquet, thanks to that bloke Louis, it's already well past eight o'clock. I arrive at Mums house to find Gemma's car already there. I burst through the front door and see once floating balloons now drifting around on the floor. I walk into the kitchen and see burnt out candles on the table and a half eaten birthday cake. And no one there. Just great. I can't believe I missed her birthday party. I'm such a terrible son. The quiet noise from the TV playing some Disney movie echoes through the house, and I find Gemma and Mum asleep on the couch. I lean down, kissing Mums cheek. "Mum, wake up. I'm here." She opens her eyes and smiles. "Hello darling," she says stretching her arms. Her smile quickly turns into a frown. "You're quite late." She states, absentmindedly stroking Gemma's hair. I sigh. "I know Mum. I had to work late, and then I had to run to the flower shop." I tell her, handing her the rose bouquet. She takes it and smiles again, and Gemma stirs beside her. "Harry?" She asks, rubbing her eyes. "Hey Gem. Long time no see." I joke, giving her a hug. My mum gets up to put the flowers in water and Gemma turns the telly off. "Harry, you have to stop this." She tells me sternly. "What are you talking about Gemma?" I ask her, actually fully aware of what she's talking about. She sighs with annoyance. "I know you were with Nick." She says, and I gulp. "He's my friend, Gem." I tell her, standing my ground. I don't care what she thinks of him. "Cut the shít Harry." She practically yells, and I am taken aback by her language. "He's bad news Harry. He's been nothing but trouble for you in the past. When will you learn?" She throws her arms up in irritation and stomps away, just as my mum walks back into the room, vase in hand. "What's the matter?" She asks worriedly, and I groan. Gemma has to stop thinking of me as her baby brother who needs protection from everything. "Gemma is just being annoying." I tell her, kissing her cheek again. She nods, but I know she'll question Gemma on it later on. That's Mum, for you. And then they'll both get involved. "I have to go, but I'll talk to you tomorrow. Happy Birthday, Mum." I say, opening the front door. She nods. "Okay, bye love." She shouts after me as I close the door behind me.
