We started to walk on the road to get home. It wasn't quiet in the streets like in the movies.

There were people yelling, screaming, and some just breaking things in their houses. Very few ventured out onto the road and sidewalk.

We just walked in silence, the light shining in front of our feet. I aimed the light up every once and a while to make sure we hadn't passed my house.

"Do you think the lights are out everywhere?" Calum's question broke the comfortable silence between us.

"I have no idea. I hope not." Just the thought of no lights anywhere was terrifying.

The dark everywhere. At every corner you turned. The thought alone could trigger a panic attack if Calum wasn't here.

Calum has always brought a sense of security. A sense of safety. His hugs felt like home.

Without him here I would definitely be having a panic attack.

After walking for a while, I spotted my mailbox. I didn't know if I should be relieved we found it, or terrified at what, or who, could be inside.

We walked up to the house doors. The door was closed, but neither of us reached for the handle.

"What if there's somebody in there." I spoke quietly, as if someone was in my house. I heard Calum sigh.

"Honestly Kat, I have no idea. We're just gonna have to take that chance."
I breathed in a shaky breath as he opened the door slowly, taking a small step inside.

The entire house was dark. It almost didn't feel like my house. I stepped inside and closed the door behind me.

I could hear Calum's breathing. It was deep and shaky. He must've been as terrified as me.

I shined the light through all of the rooms surrounding us, standing right beside Calum the entire time.

"I don't think anybody is here." Calum said after we had finished checking and tripping on almost everything in all of the rooms we had checked.

"So what now?" I asked. Are we supposed to find other people? Stay in the house? Find light? I had no idea.

"Well... Maybe we should stay here until morning." He took a deep breath. "I mean the sun is going to rise at some point, so at least we would be able to see."

I thought it sounded like a good plan. Then in the morning we could figure everything out, without tripping over everything in our path.

"Okay." It was the best (and only) plan we had, so I guess that's what we had to do.

"Should we lock the doors and stuff?" I asked. It only made sense to me.

"Ya, that's a good idea. Then we should get more lights." Calum said. He followed me to all of the doors and locked them all, including the windows and anything else that could let someone in.

I then lead him to my mothers room and into her closet, that had lots of candles packed away. I'm not sure why she always bough candles just to put them back here, but now I'm glad she did.

After rummaging through her closet, I found a lighter and two cheap keychain flashlights. Better than nothing.

We headed back to my room and sat on the floor. I flicked the lighter on and started to light the pile of candles we had gathered.

"Well since I know I'm not getting any sleep, you can lay down and I'll keep watch or whatever." Calum said. He sounded like a clićhe character in a movie.

"Calum. Do you really think I'm gonna get any sleep?" I said, lighting another candle. I heard him let out a light laugh.

"Well then we have a long time to wait together." He said, sighing. Calum leaned back on the floor and propped himself up on his elbows.

"What about our parents. And my sister." He said, looking up at the ceiling. I just thought for a minute while I lit the last candle.

"I don't know Calum." At this point I didn't really know anything anymore.
