WARNING: LANGUAGE AND VIOLENCE
Link walks the last 15 minutes home from school alone. As he does this, excitement courses through his veins. He gets impatient to get home and then wait for his mother.
He is ecstatic to have a real friend for once. Usually kids just tolerated him, if they were above teasing him.
His happiness quickly drains away, though, when he sees the dreaded blue pickup truck parked in his driveway. Link regrets trying to get home faster, now. That truck means Jimmy is home, which unpleasantly surprises Link because his step father usually didn't get home until around 5, an hour before his mother. While the two were alone, Link would pretend to be doing homework in his room so he wouldn't he bothered as much.
But it was only 3. That meant 3 hours with Jimmy by himself. Hopefully it was one of his rare good days, which happened once in a blue moon.
Link braced himself as he quietly pushed open the screen door, trying to go unnoticed.
His hopes were shattered as he heard the cold, raspy, drunken voice of Jimmy yell out, "Charles, boy, you better get your ass in here and explain your sorry shit!"
Link cringed as he shut the door. There was no hiding now. He'd already tried running away from Jimmy once. It only made things worse for him.
The young, timid boy shuffled into the trashy living room where Jimmy stood. When Link lifted his head to face his step father, his whole body began to shake in fear.
Jimmy's eyes were red and bloodshot. He had been up to something bad, Link knew. His greasy hair hung limply over his creased brows. His mouth was set into one of the most fierce snarls Link had ever seen. He towered over Link, with so much inner rage, you could practically see it.
In the hands of this enraged monster was a bowling trophy, 1st, etched into it's metal plating. The only thing off with it was that the small golden figurine portraying a man bowling, had snapped off of its proud pedestal. It was an easy fix, but there was never any reasoning with Jimmy.
Link's heart beat faster than it ever had before, even more than some of his worst anxiety attacks. Of course Jimmy knew Link had broken it. There are no earthquakes in North Carolina. And no one in this house was clumsy like him. No one ever visited either, so it couldn't be a guest. And it was Link who had broken the stupid thing. He was frustrated again and had no outlet to dispense his anger so he had kicked the shelf angrily. He felt immediate regret as he watched the damned trophy fall to the ground, too far from his reach to catch it. It would have been okay if it hadn't smacked onto another shelf on the way down.
Now Jimmy glowered at Link and stared straight into his glistening, blue eyes, now forming premature tears. He knew crying made his step dad more cruel. But he couldn't help it.
"Damn you, boy!" Jimmy screamed, "Why you fu·king around with my shit all the g¤damn time!?"
Link began silently pouring tears as he dropped eye contact, "I'm sorry, sir. It-I-it was an a-acc-cid-d-dent." the boy choked out.
Don't be a FU*KING LIAR, you NO GOOD PILE OF SHIT! WHY ARE YOU FU·KING HERE? YOUR MOTHER IS A NO GOOD BITCH, JUST LIKE YOU'RE A USELESS PIECE OF SHIT!" Jimmy yelled, his face red and leaning down toward Link's face.
The boy began to bawl out loud now, sobs racking his body. He only got a few in, though, before a hard punch was delivered to his ear. Immediately, the sounds to his right quieted down to a dull drone. Jimmy swept his arm across Link's shoulder and brought him to the ground, hard. Luckily his head didn't make contact with anything on the way down.
Link's body froze in fear. He couldn't get himself to move in time. Jimmy's leg reared back, and Link prayed he would go unconscious...
