Sorry these next 2 chapters are kind of uneventful. But they were kind of necessary to set the stage for chapters to come. And they were fun to write because of the contrast between them. Enjoy :)

Rhett awoke to the normal shaking of his mother's hand and her voice lightly calling his name.

He rolled over to face her smiling face before she left the room to finish breakfast.

Groggily, Rhett managed to dress himself in his usual shorts and T-shirt before heading downstairs himself.

He sat down at the table, where Cole was finishing homework that he clearly didn't do last night. Dianne was at the counter pouring some sugar while scolding him simultaneously.

"I told you to finish that project!" She said, upsetedly. "I can't believe you lied to me saying you did!" She was almost shouting now, which Rhett was not used to.

Cole just groaned and rolled his eyes disrespectfully. Fortunately for him, Dianne couldn't see him with her back turned, making Rhett struggle to hold back a snicker.

In just a few minutes, a plate of steaming pancakes with a side of bacon and eggs, sunnyside up, were placed in front of the young boy's awaiting face. Dianne, pleased with her creation, sat down at one end of the dining table, a piece of toast and a mug of coffee in her hands.

As Rhett devoured the dish and Cole was whining about how unfair it was that he couldn't eat until his homework was done, Rhett's father strolled tiredly into the room. He grunted as he sat down on the opposite end of the table than his mother's and glanced apprehensively at the paper already layed out for him. His father wasn't necessarily a morning person.

Dianne, trying to lighten the unusually quiet morning, spoke to Rhett, "Sweetie, after your basketball practice today-"

She was cut off by a groan from Rhett. "Hey!" His father shouted sternly, "Basketball is gonna be your way, boy! You better like it!"

Rhett nodded reluctantly in submission. He didn't hate the sport. It just took a lot of his free time. His father was always pushing it on him, too, which got annoying.

"Anyway," Dianne continued, "after your practice, we will have to rush home before 5 and get you cleaned up."

Cole shouted triumphantly, signaling he had finally finished. He reached out for a piece of toast but his father slapped his hand.

"Get ready, boy! Then you can eat."

Cole mumbled something before running upstairs.

Just as his mother was about to recontinue, his dad murmured an expletive, that Rhett (fortunately) didn't hear, followed by a statement that he was going to be late. He rushed out the door, his wife and youngest son shouting "Love you"s after him.

Dianne sighed and finally finished her thought. "Okay, Sugar? We have to hurry up, so no messing around with Tim." She said, referring to one of Rhett's closest teammates.

"Why?" Rhett asked, completely devoid of the reason.

His mother smiled, "Why, you have a sleepover with Link, baby! I wanted to tell you while everyone was still here, so they knew too, but, oh well."

Rhett stopped listening after "sleepover with Link". He had completely forgotten! He jumped from his seat with ecstasy, shouting, "We have to go now, Mama! To make the sleepover come faster!"

Mama Di chuckled at his outburst. "Sweetie, that ain't how it works. But it would be nice to leave soon, so y'all won't be late for school."

Rhett nearly tripped over his own feet running up the stairs to tell Cole to hurry up.

After what seemed like forever, Rhett finally found himself at school.

Meanwhile, Dianne was driving back home, mentally preparing for tonight's dinner and guest. She was so happy for the two boys.

But she wished she could have told her older son and husband what to excpect; especially Richard. Dianne knew Link didn't have a really good fatherly figure and she worried that because of such an authoritative man in the house, Link might be nervous. In addition, Richard could be a little, insensitive, so to speak. And Dianne was dimly aware of what an anxious case Link was.

She brushed away those thoughts, thinking he couldn't be that bad.
