ALASTOR’S POV

Rosie was in rare form this afternoon chin lifted, smile sharp, fingers steepled as she spoke to us like she was discussing an unruly but promising investment. Ah, can't say that it was not as she have predicted.

“Prime pickings to make a deal my friend..” Rosie said, swirling her teacup. “Especially for Y/N i presume...”

I laughed lightly, the sound neat and practiced. “Oh, I appreciate the offer but we have other things to do...”

Charlie beamed from across the table, shoulders straightening a little at that. I turned my head instinctively to my side.

“Well I'm sure darling Y/N wouldn't mind,” I added, voice bright, casual. “What do you think, my—”

Then the word caught on my tongue. The space beside me was empty. My smile tightened but didn’t falter. Not at first. I merely paused, eyes flicking to the space where Y/N should have been standing beside me, where you always were, legs tucked in too close, hands folded infront whilst holding your cane, listening more than speaking.

But now that you're not by my side. The air somehow felt… wrong. cooler and vacant.

I blinked once.

Rosie followed my gaze. Her lipstick smile thinned. “Darling?” she asked. “Were you speaking to the furniture?”

Charlie leaned forward, confusion knitting her brows. “Wait—where is Y/N?”

Ah.

There it was.

That small, unpleasant twist in my chest. Like a string pulled just a bit too tight. I just don't know why.

I chuckled. “Why, surely she’s just stepped away. One can’t expect a lady to listen endlessly through our charming little debates.”

Rosie’s eyes sharpened. She set her cup down with deliberate care. “Alastor,” she said slowly, “she didn’t excuse herself. And you know my establishment, no one slips out unnoticed.”

Charlie frowned harder. “She wouldn’t leave without telling you. She always tells you.”

I covered up my unsettled heart with a laugh and waved a hand, dismissive, though my fingers felt stiff. “Oh, now, no need for theatrics. I’m certain she’s nearby.”

But my shadow—my shadow was behaving awfully wrong.

It stretched a little farther than it should have, pooling near the doorway like ink that hadn’t quite dried. As if mirroring my anxiousness. It too noticed how bizzare Y/N's sudden disappearance.

That twist in my chest tightened.

“Well!” I said briskly, standing. “I’ll fetch her myself. Rosie, my dear, do keep Charlie company, won’t you?”

Rosie rose halfway from her chair, concern bleeding through her composed tone. “Alastor—”

“I insist,” I cut in pleasantly. Too pleasantly. “I’ll be but a moment.”
