Y/N'S POV

The hospital hallways’ lights flickered erratically, casting long, jittering shadows that crawled along the sterile walls.

The faint, metallic scent of disinfectant mingled with something heavier and an unplaceable tension that made your chest tighten. Somewhere far off, the soft, rhythmic tapping of a phone echoed, bouncing off the linoleum floors and high, silent ceilings.

You sat pressed against the cold wall, your back stiff, your legs pulled close to you. The dim glow from your phone illuminated your pale face, highlighting the tight line of your lips and the crease between your brows. Every ring made your heart jolt. You stared at the screen as if willing it to connect, but each time the light dimmed to black.

"The number you have dialed is unattended..."

The robotic female voice cut through the silence like a knife. The beep that followed felt like a hammer striking your chest. The name ‘Dad’ on your contacts glimmered faintly before fading, leaving a hollow emptiness.

You pursed your lips and furrowed your brow, tapping the call button again. The same unfeeling voice answered, mocking you with its mechanical tone.

"Answer..."

Your hand fisted at your side, nails digging into your palm, while the other hand gripped the phone like it was the last lifeline in the world. The hallway lights flickered violently in response to the storm of frustration coiling inside you.

"Liar..."

You stared at the three conspicuous letters on your screen, laughter bitter and sharp, slicing through the quiet.

If I call you, will you come Dad?

Of course, my little spider Lilly, I’ll come faster than the wind…

Woah! Like Superman??

Yes… Like Superman…

Your teeth ground together, and your eyes watered. The hall seemed to shrink as the voices of past promises echoed around you, reverberating from the linoleum walls.

"YOU LIED TO ME!"

The phone shot from your hand, spinning violently before slamming against the opposite wall. The crash was deafening in the empty corridor, fragments scattering like shards of your trust across the floor. You collapsed against the wall again, covering your eyes, your shoulders trembling.

"Dad… Mom is really dying… come back… Please come back…"

A sudden warmth landed on your shoulder. You flinched, jerking upright, your gaze snapping to the figures beside you. The familiar presence startled you, and for a moment your breath caught in your throat.
