For a moment, it was eerily silent.
And then Clifford smacked his hands together. "We apologize for the disturbance, everyone! As gratitude to your understanding," he paused, taking a good look at each customer who'd stopped whatever it was they were doing and granted him the attention he asked for, "We are going to give you a slice of our special blueberry cheesecake!"
Smiling, though still tersely, at the generally positive response of the customers, Clifford sneaked his gaze towards Reese and Megan who were by the counter, merely an audience to the whole debacle, and told them, "Well, you heard what I said. Go give our customers some blueberry love!"
The two scrambled off into the kitchen. That was when he walked over to the counter, to my post, and I immediately followed.
He was pressing in buttons on the cash register again and again, watching the little ding at the bottom slide in and out. He didn't look happy, or sad. Instead, his face was expressionless, and it was when the two waitresses emerged from the kitchen carrying with them several plates of blueberry cheesecake that he finally looked up.
Simply put, he was scowling.
"You," he yapped. "What do you think you're doing, spilling hot coffee all over a customer?"
Unable to think of anything else, I said the first thing on my mind. "I'm really sorry for what happened earlier! But it was an accident. A while ago was an accident, I promise! Cross my heart. Hope to die. I promise, I really didn't mean for that to happen. I don't know what exactly happened either. It's like there was just this sudden imbalance and... and I was so nervous that–"
He disrespectfully turned his back on me, scampering to the back barista's kitchen without letting me finish.
But if anything wrong happens, you are fired in an instant. Be extra careful with the customers, because once I receive a complaint against you, I won't be so nice to give you a second chance.
Worry washed over me. I was feeling more and more like Alice now, hovering before the rabbit hole, debating whether or not it'd be a good fall – but not like there were good falls in the first place.
The rest of the working hours didn't pass by as eventfully, but I was already grateful enough that re-runs of the earlier incident didn't make any appearance – which, in fact, brought me to the fact that perhaps it just wasn't my clumsiness that put me on a danger pedestal. It was, maybe, partly the fault of the person who'd been stuck smirking-slash-glaring at me for the past couple of hours: Megan.
