I couldn't help it—I was going to cry.

To save the last of my pride, I immediately ran out of the room, and thanked the heavens for the breath of air the hallway gave me.

I had no clear plan of what I was going to do now, because my mind was in such a whirlwind that I thought it was impossible I was still conscious. My mind definitely wasn't, and I was so surprised when I felt a hand on my shoulder that gently turned me around.

In front of me, I saw Alex, and he realized I was crying. Nonplussed, his eyes searched mine for some sort of answer, but when he got none, he just pulled me in for a comforting hug, his hands patting my back. That was when I broke down, and I cried and cried and cried into his shoulder, not caring about the childish whines I was probably giving off that could scare even the fattest red bull.

"Shh, it's okay," he murmured, patting my hair too, his warmth the opposite of suffocating.

I just cried even more, unsure of what I did so wrong to deserve this kind of behavior from someone who barely knew who I was. Alex, though not knowing anything that happened inside the office, continued to ease me anyway, sending comforting pats on my back all this time. "It's okay, Mia. Don't cry."

"I don't understand it," I said, my voice muffled against his shoulder. Poor Alex, his tux was moist thanks to me, but now that I was hiccupping, now that the tears stopped coming, I pulled back from him, his hands leaving my back and falling to my shoulders.

"What is it?" He asked softly and gently, like a marshmallow couch after a long, humid day of work. "What don't you understand?"

I shook my head, rapidly rubbing my eyes with the backs of my palms, wanting to get rid of the last signs of tears. "It's nothing."

Alex frowned, his hands leaving my shoulders. "Mia, I will personally be offended if you don't tell me what the matter is. What happened in there?"

"Will you really be offended?" I asked.

"Very."

With that, I told him everything: from the Q&A portion, to the accusation of being a drop-out because I didn't want to finish college, and the silence-buying 50 thousand dollars.

"Oh, and he said he had an inkling I was more than what meets the eye," I added, ignoring the knot in my stomach that told me to stop, "which makes him think I'm the culprit behind the bug."
