I remember in one of The Walking Dead's episodes in season two where Rick enters the church and crouches down facing Jesus' statue;

"Guess you already know I'm not much of a believer, I guess I just chose to put my faith elsewhere. My family most of all, my friends, my job.. the thing is, I could use a little help to keep us coming. Some kind of.. acknowledgment, indication I'm doing the right thing. But now, I don't need all the answers. Just a little sign. Any sign will do." Says Rick, jaded, almost faded.

This scene in its glory showed me how mankind can be alone and exasperated sometimes; so much so that all their hope would be tied to a sign, a guidance, a simple signal from a statue.

No difference if you're a believer or not.
When everything goes dark, when earth cracks up and blacks out underneath you, an inner voice shouts within you: "help me." To anyone, anything.
And maybe that's what makes us human.
