Sunlight filtered through the warm, calm, and friendly Sunclan camp. It was just a beautiful leaf-fall day.
A little group of tiny kits squirmed out onto the clearing, sneakily staying low.
They all hid into a large bush, making their way to the top surface of the bush.
The smallest one, a dusky brown she-cat with a long tail and bright amber eyes peered up, pushing her brother, a darker brown tabby tom with dark blue eyes, down again.
"Hey, Petalkit, you shouldn't be up there without help! Let me call a warr-"
Before the tom could continue, his other sister, who was a pretty, sand-colored she-cat with green eyes bounded in front of him. "Relax, Hawkkit, you know Petalkit is a great climber!"
"Yeah, stop worrying about me and Honeykit! We'll be fine!" Petalkit called back.
Hawkkit was about to protest when the last kit, a black and white green-eyed she-cat tumbled into the bush. Sitting up, she faced Hawkkit and Honeykit.
"It sure is prickly in here," she observed. "Ooh, I want to climb to the top too!"
Honeykit laughed at Hawkkit and nodded to her sister. "C'mon, Lakekit! Before Petalkit gets spotten!"
Hawkkit tried to persuade his sister that they should be in the nursery but Lakekit kept climbing the branches of the bush until she was at the top. She didn't see Honeykit and Petalkit at first, and she blinked in confusion.
She looked ahead to see her sisters. She realized they were talking to their father, Stormstrike, the deputy. As Hawkkit arrived to the top, Lakekit sweeped her tail over his mouth. Hawkkit pushed her away.
"I told you they would get in trouble." The tabby tom-kit mewed, his tail tip twitching.
Lakekit quickly hopped back down the branches. She heard Hawkkit groan, obviously annoyed he climbed the bush for nothing.
Lakekit sneaked up behind Stormstrike, who was scolding Honeykit and Petalkit for climbing the bush. Lakekit smirked and then pounced on her father's back.
Stormstrike let out a wail of alarm and realized it was his daughter. He jumped up and shook Lakekit around. The black and white she-kit laughed, but didn't let her grip go.
Stormstrike smirked. "Oh no! A fox cub got me!" He wailed in mock fear. Immediately warriors looked over in alarm. Dawnstar peered from overtop the Highbranch, his mate, Lunarshine, brushing close to him. The two queens, Poppyflight, and Stormstrike's mate, Birchlily, viciously guarded the nursery, Poppyflight's kit, Grasskit, close behind.
Lakekit was highly embarrassed, and let go of Stormstrike quickly. As the clan realized Stormstrike had just said that to embarrass Lakekit, they stalked back to their dens and let out sighs of relief.
Lakekit was a little mad at her father, and that no one had gotten angry for alarming them. Is it because he's the deputy? Lakekit asked herself.
Lakekit started heading back to the nursery. Her mother, Birchlily, was talking to Poppyflight by the entrance. Grasskit played with a leaf near them.
"Hi, Grasskit!" Lakekit gave her friend a greeting. Grasskit was three moons old, two moons younger than Lakekit, so Lakekit often played as the warrior when she played warrior and apprentice with him. Grasskit really admired Lakekit, so he often did whatever she wanted to.
Grasskit stretched. "Where's everyone else?" He asked, and then quickly added, "We should all play mossball together!"
Lakekit looked over her shoulder. Only Honeykit was still talking to Stormstrike, which wasn't surprising because Honeykit talks a lot. Petalkit was with Hawkkit, probably arguing about Petalkit's new adventure idea; despite the fact Petalkit and Hawkkit looked very similar, both dark brown, they had very different personalities.
"They're all busy. " Lakekit replied. "Let's get something from the fresh-kill pile, and then find Boulderpaw and Leafpaw. We can tell them we caught it."
Grasskit giggled, and then bounded over to Birchlily and Poppyflight.
"May we get something from the fresh-kill pile?" Grasskit asked his mother politely. Poppyflight whispered something to Birchlily, and both queens laughed.
"Yes, yes." Poppyflight replied.
Ignoring their sudden laughter, the two lots made their way to the fresh-kill pile. Lakekit grabbed a thrush and hopped over to where Boulderpaw and Leafpaw were sharing a squirrel.
"Hey Boulderpaw." Grasskit greeted the gray tom. "Look what we caught."
Lakekit spat out the thrush onto the ground in front of them. "Just a thrush that happened to be passing near the camp entrance." She stated triumphly.
"You caught that?" Leafpaw stared at them is shock, his eyes wide.
"You caught that." Boulderpaw echoed, and laughed. "I'm pretty sure Harespring caught it this on a patrol this morning."
Lakekit peered over to Grasskit, who was staring at his paws now.
"Um..." Lakekit gulped. "Sorry, we were just joking."
"We're not mad." Leafpaw spat out before Boulderpaw could even open his muzzle. "Aren't we, Boulderpaw?"
Boulderpaw shrugged. "Whatever. You were worse then them as a kit anyway."
Leafpaw rolled his eyes. Boulderpaw and Leafpaw weren't littermates, but they were together in the nursery before Lakekit and Grasskit were born. Lakekit heard stories that Leafpaw had a sister, but she strangely went missing. Lakekit could tell that Leafpaw had lost someone, because he looked upset when he saw Lakekit with her littermates. And he obviously didn't like Boulderpaw too much.
"Hey! Watch out!" Lakekit was startled by Petalkit's shout. She zipped around, and Petalkit was plunging down from the sky.
