Petalkit was falling from Starclan knows where, but she was falling really fast.
Lakekit tried to run to the side but wasn't quick enough. Petalkit plunged on top of her sister, and weakly gasped.
"That. Was. The. Best." Petalkit breathed after each word. Petalkit attempted to get up, but let out a shrill wince of pain.
Lakekit squeaked. "Petalkit, get-"
Lakekit was interrupted by Hawkkit, who was squealing in worry. The medicine cat, Reedpelt, at his side. Reedpelt's eyes were dull with age but also calmness. The gray tabby slowly helped Lakekit out from under Petalkit. "Are you okay?"
Lakekit nodded awkwardly. "Y-yes. She's smaller than me anyway."
Reedpelt gave Lakekit a quick lick between the ears but showed no cheerfulness. The elderly tomcat turned to Petalkit. Petalkit avoided his gaze, but then gave up. "I wanted to climb Tall Oak, but I slipped and fell." Petalkit mewed an apology and tried to hop up, but she let out another squeal of pain. She dramatically held her hind leg, letting out hurtful and true mews.
"Right, let me check them." Reedpelt turned to Stormstrike, who Lakekit hadn't noticed had arrived until now. "Can you carry her to my den?"
Stormstrike nodded. "Will you need any herbs?"
Reedpelt shook his head. "Not yet, I need to figure out what's wrong. Although," Reedpelt lowered his voice. "I'm running low on comfrey."
Lakekit flinched. Comfrey was used to mend broken bones. Petalkit was the toughest one of the four littermates, why would a small fall hurt her so much if it didn't mean she was broken somewhere?
Lakekit stalked over to where Honeykit and Hawkkit were awkwardly sharing a squirrel, and Grasskit was sitting, fiddling his paws. Lakekit sat beside Grasskit, and looked at him. "Will Petalkit be okay?"
Grasskit flinched. This was usually something he would ask Lakekit. The golden tabby kit lifted his white paw to give it a quick lick.
"Um, well, er-" he finally replied. "She's strong. She'll live. Although, what she did was pretty squirrel-brained."
Lakekit was surprised. Grasskit had never called anyone squirrel-brained before. It wasn't harsh, Lakekit thought so herself, but Grasskit had never used those words before. Lakekit stared at him for a minute, and realized how mature he looked. He might as well be an apprentice now.
"Are you okay?" Grasskit prodded Lakekit with his paw. Lakekit hadn't realized she was staring.
"Er-I'm.." Lakekit blushed.
"You'll be okay, I'm sure. Petalkit will only be in the next Tree Hollow over, and she's so energetic she won't be able to stay in Reedpelt's den much longer than a day or two. Plus, you've got Hawkkit, and Honeykit. And, er, me."
Lakekit smiled back to her denmate. She put her muzzle near his ear. "Thanks, Grasskit." She whispered, before going to her siblings. Honeykit seemed to be lightened up, talking like a chatty squirrel, and Hawkkit was acting like he was ready to tell Honeykit to shut up.
I'll be okay.
