Lakekit shuffled in her nest. She could feel Birchlily's warmth and hear Hawkkit's soft snoring.
Petalkit's not here. She thought to herself. The small she-kit was confined to the medicine cat den for a quarter-moon, at the least. Her leg had broke.
Lakekit snuggled down, but then realized there were only two other scents in the nest, not three. Honeykit wasn't there.
Lakekit quietly climbed out of the nest, and made her way out of the nursery. The wind was blowing lightly, and a few warriors were out for the dawn patrol.
Lightstreak and her mate, Mousetail, were sharing an owl in the sunlight. Lakekit padded over to them.
"Good morning, Lakekit!" Lightstreak mewed with the same tone as her sister, Birchlily.
Lakekit smiled back to her, and purred. "Hi, Lightstreak. Have you seen Honeykit?"
Lightstreak shook her head, but Mousetail spoke, raising his paw.
"I think she's with Petalkit and Reedpelt." The black Tom chuckled. "Probably driving Reedpelt crazy."
That's true. Lakekit thought to herself. "Thanks, Mousetail!" She mewed, turning around to Reedpelt's den.
She could hear Honeykit babbling- not surprising- so Lakekit stepped in. Petalkit was sleepily eating a mouse in a nest, while Honeykit and Reedpelt were near the herb store.
"I know these herbs, you gave them to Poppyflight when she was sick!" Honey prodded a crispy leaf.
"Yes, that's Yak Leaf. Used for shivers and runny noses." Reedpelt replied, sounding a bit annoyed, but impressed.
"H-hi, Lakekit." Petalkit wearily mewed.
Lakekit smiled to her sister. "Doing okay?"
Petalkit nodded. "I'm o-only tired 'cause of th-the poppy seeds."
Lakekit padded over to Honeykit and Reedpelt, and flicked her ears.
"What are you doing?" The black-and-white kit asked.
"I'm helping Reedpelt with some herb mixes," Honeykit mewed with triumph. "I already learned some, Water Mint, Yak Leaf, Birch Leaf, and Borage."
Petalkit shuffled around. "She k-knows a lot already."
Lakekit soon asked Honeykit if she wanted to go play in the clearing, but Honeykit shook her head.
"I kind of want to stay here for a bit," the golden she-kit awkwardly explained. "You could find Hawkkit or Grasskit."
"Or keep Lightstreak some company," Reedpelt spoke up.
"Why?" Lakekit flicked her ears.
"Well, she's due for kits soon enough." Reedpelt didn't look up from the herb store. "She'll need to move to the nursery any day now."
"Wow!" Honeykit was amazed. "Did StarClan tell you that? Or did your medicine cat senses realize she was having kits?"
Reedpelt gave a croaky laugh. "Of course not, she told me. You always tell the medicine cat when you're having kits."
Lakekit walked out of the medicine cat den, a little disappointed. I'm almost positive she'll be Reedpelt's apprentice. Digging into the ground in frustration, Lakekit padded over to the nursery.
