Prologue

It was a day to remember, the sun was shining, the birds were singing high in the trees. We were happy.

We were lounging in the summer sun, looking up into the sky. She rolled over onto her belly to face me, I did the same. She was a lot thinner now; you could see her cheek bones protruding out of her skin. She used to have locks of long brunette hair, way past her shoulders. But now, all she had left was short stubble hidden under a purple bandanna. Her eyes were a fantastic shade of green, like emeralds, only better. Across her face was an assortment of many freckles, it was as if someone had splatted paint onto it. She had the sort of smile that you couldn’t help but smile back at, no matter how blue you were feeling. She was my best friend.

We were enjoying what little freedom we had left before school started again. We had spent most of our summer together this year, especially when she told me she had very important news, that under no circumstances could I tell anyone…
