Justin's POV
"Maria!" I yelled as I ran into her. She was standing outside Ana's room, pacing back and forth. She looked up and saw me and collapsed in my arms. "Gosh, I'm so sorry, Justin." "What happened?" I asked in a panic. "Nothing. She had a panic attack, and I freaked out; I shouldn't have called you like that," she cried. I rubbed her back, "it's okay; I should've been here sooner, but..." I paused, trying to figure out if I should tell her about my conversation with Brittney.
"But what?" She asked, looking at me. "I stopped by the house to grab some things," I said as I held up the bag. "Hope you don't mind, but I went into your room and grabbed some things off your own, including this," I held up the photo.
She let out a breath and held the frame. "You know I believe that this is the only photo that we ever have taken together," she said. "Well, when Ana gets out of the hospital, we'll change that," I hugged her again and kissed her head. Before we knew it, a nurse was coming out of Ana's room.
"Is she okay?" Maria asked. "She's fine; she had a panic attack, so we gave her a sedative. She's sleeping now, but you can go see her." The nurse nodded her head and left. We both walked into the room and saw a sleeping Ana. Maria took the frame and put it on the table next to her. She sat on one side while I sat on the other. I took Ana's hand and stroked it gently. I know I was struggling with Ana, but I can't even imagine how Maria must feel. Anastasia was her only family. To see her sister so close to death must be horrific. Although I love Maria, I hope she knows that I consider her my family and would do anything for her even if Ana wasn't around anymore. "Listen, Maria, I know you must be scared for Ana right now, but I want you to know I'm here for you no matter what happens," I said.
"Thank you, Justin, but nothing is going to happen. Ana is going to be fine; we are going to be fine. When Ana is all better, we will take a trip somewhere out of the country to leave all these problems behind. I want you to understand something, Justin; this is not your fault. You couldn't have possibly known Brittney would do something as heinous as this. Don't beat yourself up."
"Thank you; I needed that," I got up and went over to hug her. As we embraced each other, and nurse came in.
"I'm sorry to bother you, but visiting times are almost over, and I need you to leave for the patient's care," she explained. "Really? Are you sure we can't stay? At least just one of us?" Maria asked. The nurse thought for a second before agreeing. "Okay, fine, just one, though," she said as she backed out of the room.
Before Maria could get the chance to argue, I told her to go home. "Are you sure?" "Of course, I'm sure, go home and get some rest; I'll see you tomorrow," she kissed my cheek before gathering her stuff and leaving. Before she left, she stopped, "oh, you should know; Val said she would be here tomorrow." I nodded my head and waited until she walked out the door.
I looked at Ana, who honestly looks so peaceful. I wonder what she was dreaming about. I hope it's something that makes her happy. I placed my hand on top of hers. I watched as her chest rose up and down with each breath she took. Then, I felt my phone vibrate. I reached into my pocket and grabbed it. There was a message from Detective Brooks. It read: we found Jared. On our way to the hospital now. How's Ana doing?
I texted back that she was fine and was sleeping at the moment. I texted my mom to let her know everything that had happened tonight. I know that she would hate to hear this kind of news through a text message, but I can't speak of what happened. I looked out the room window for a second to gather my thoughts on the events that took place today. My wife was kidnapped, beaten, and maybe assaulted by my ex-girlfriend and her ex-boyfriend...and I'm to blame. I should never have gone looking for Jared. I should've just minded my business, as Ana said. As for Brittney, I don't know how I would have fixed that. I could've left her alone. No stop, Justin. Remember what Maria said, none of this is my fault; I could have never known that Brittney would go this far.
Now she's after me. I wish she would've chosen me as her enemy rather than Ana.
"Justin?"
I looked up to see Brooks. "How is she?""She has a long road to recovery, but doctors say she'll be fine. How's Jared? Has he told you anything?" "The only thing he has asked about is Ana; he wants to know how she's doing."
"How she's doing?! He should know how she's doing; he did this to her," I said, raising my voice slightly. I looked down at Ana, hoping I didn't wake her up. "My wife is in the hospital because for him, and he has the balls to ask how she's doing."
"He's claiming that he didn't hurt Ana, that it was some other man," Brooks said as he took a seat.
"Bullshit. He hurt Ana, and he's trying to get away with it. Let me talk to him; I'll get the truth out of him," I said. Brooks shook his head, "It wouldn't be productive, plus you are also considered a victim, Justin."
"Please, Brooks, I'm begging you. I need answers. Maybe he'll know where Brittney is. I can't just sit here and look at the pain he caused my wife."
Brooks let out a sigh and looked at Ana. I could see he was contemplating my proposal. "Fine, 5 minutes, that's it, not a second more. And you can't hurt him; just talk to him."
"That's all I want," I reassured. Brooks got up and moved toward the door. I kissed Ana on her head, "I'll be right back, baby, I promise." I followed Brooks to Jared's room which was a few floors above Ana's. There was a police officer who was posted outside his door. He looked tired and ready for someone to take over. Brooks nodded at him and opened the door, letting me in. Jared was lying in bed, handcuffed to the rails. He had a black eye and bruises all over. His eyes were closed, but I could tell he wasn't sleeping. "Five minutes," Brooks said before closing the door and leaving us alone.
"Is she okay?" That was the first thing he said. I clenched my fists; this was going to be harder than I thought. "You should know; you put her here."
He pulled arms against his cuff, making them rattle. "How many times do I have to say this? I didn't hurt her. I love her!" "You don't hurt the people you love! Did you rape her?"
"What? That's fucking sick. I would never do something like that," he screamed. "Then how did she escape? How did she end up in a hospital bed?" I questioned.
He took a deep breath, "after Brittney left, Ana and I got to talking. I realized what I was doing was wrong, and Ana didn't deserve any of this. So I let her go, as we were about to leave a man I didn't know was outside the door. He told us that we weren't going anywhere. That's when he grabbed Ana and slammed her into the wall. I attacked him, and we started fighting. I told Ana to run, and she did. We kept fighting, but I guess he knocked me out cause when I woke, the room was empty. I left to find Ana, and that's when I saw the police, so I hid but as you can see I was found. I know it's impossible to have faith in me, but please believe when I say I didn't touch her in any way. You can ask her yourself. She'll tell you the same thing."
"I can't do that. Her jaw is wired shut. She has a concussion, broken ribs, a broken leg, a broken eye socket! And to make matters worse, she lost the baby. So when my wife wakes up, I have to tell her that our child is dead. And even if you didn't push the knife into her stomach, it is still your fault." I grabbed the door handle to leave but stopped. "I swear if you're lying, not even god will be able to keep you safe from me." I left the room and headed back to Ana.
