They started to walk down the long street, "so why do you smoke, i have a girlfriend who has lung cancer and it sucks not being able to breathe, so why do you do it?" Gus continued to talk to the quiet girl that was walking beside him. Alaska, without even having to think about an answer, replied "I smoke to die..." Gus was surprised by this blunt harsh answer but took it; Alaska seemed like the girl who doesn't open up to anyone, let alone a stranger. "That's the difference between us" she started "i smoke to die and you smoke to prove you won't". They walked and chatted for hours, him gripping the cigarette in his teeth and her chain smoking. Finally they reached his car. "it was great meeting you Alaska Young" he turned to her and stared into her bright green eyes and she stared back into into his light brown ones. "You too, Augustus Waters."
And that's how they parted, he got in his car and sped away and she carried on walking. Two people, who were never supposed to meet, met, talked and never forgot each other till the day they both died, one from cancer and one from a car crash...
