Four Years Later
Jeremy
Morning begins with laughter.
Not alarms.
Not phone calls from producers.
Not the buzz of another audition notification lighting up my phone before sunrise.
Just laughter.
Three tiny voices echo through the hallway before I even open my eyes.
"Daddy!"
"Daaaaaddy!"
"No, I found him first!"
The bedroom door bursts open, and suddenly three little bodies climb onto the bed like they're storming a castle.
I barely have time to sit up before Peter launches himself into my lap.
Robert wraps both arms around my waist.
Josie crawls onto the mattress, dramatically flopping across Cecilia's legs.
"I win!" she declares.
"There isn't a contest," Cecilia mumbles from beneath the blankets.
"There is now," Peter says matter-of-factly.
I laugh.
Every morning feels like controlled chaos.
And I wouldn't trade it for anything.
It's been four years.
Four years since the triplets came barreling into our lives and permanently rearranged our priorities.
Sometimes I still remember the night they were born.
The nervous pacing.
The hospital bracelets.
The way Cecilia squeezed my hand and somehow managed to comfort me while she was the one doing all the hard work.
She kept smiling between contractions.
"I knew you were going to do that," she'd teased.
"What?"
"Worry enough for both of us."
She was right.
When Peter Christian arrived first, I cried.
When Robert Giovanni followed minutes later, I cried harder.
By the time Josie Elaine made her dramatic entrance—loud enough for the entire maternity floor to hear—I wasn't even pretending to hold back tears anymore.
Three perfect little miracles.
Our answered prayers.
"Daddy?"
Peter pokes my shoulder.
"Are you thinking again?"
"I am."
"About breakfast?"
I grin.
"Actually..."
"Mommy?"
He nods toward Cecilia.
She's finally opened one eye.
Still beautiful.
Still the woman who stole my heart all those years ago.
Even with the satin burgundy bonnet.
Especially with the bonnet.
