"YOU!" I yelled, jumping to my feet and pointing at Ciel. "You're alive?" I feel a gloved hand cover my mouth and I begin thrashing about. The man behind me clears his throat.
"My lady, that is quite a rude thing to ask, isn't it?" He announces before leaning down to my height. "Say another word about that and I'll have your head. The Queen doesn't need to know where the young master has been." He whispers. I freeze. After 3 years, I find Ciel, a boy who was forced into slavery alongside me alive and well. What the heck. First of all, how is he alive? I thought they were using him as a human sacrifice to summon a demon. Unless...he created a contract with the demon? I flinch and spin around to face the man behind me. After all Carnell taught me about the spiritual world, I could definitely recognize a demon in a glance. Raven black hair, gloves, crimson irises, Yep, definitely a demon. I hear someone calling my name, and I quickly turn around. The Queen is beckoning for me to sit at the table. I stride to the tiny bench and sit down.
"Cana Aloister right?" She asks, smiling while gesturing for me to drink my tea. I pick up the delicate teacup and bring it to my lips.
"Yes, your majesty. My Uncle Carnell Aloister told me I would become your raven after his death, may I inquire why I was called here this afternoon?" I state. Her face abruptly contours into one of sadness.
"Why, dear girl, I am so sorry. Did you not hear the news? Your Uncle passed away last night. I give you my condole-" Wait... What did she say? I drop my head to my chest and stare at the ground in horror. Dead? That's impossible! The cheery Carnell Aloister, the one that took care of me for three years, the one I have never seen cry, dead? No, no, no!
"Ah..I-I see," I stutter. Carnell taught me to never show weakness no matter the circumstances, and I quickly blink away the tears forming in my eyes.
"Yes, yes. I am so sorry, my dear child." The queen says. She motions for the man standing next to her to bring her an envelope. "This was found tucked in his cravat when we found him," The queen adds. Taking the golden envelope from her hands, I shudder as I slowly open the envelope. I unfold the paper with trembling hands and gasp as I read its contents.
My dear Cana,
I am so sorry but I do not think I will ever be able to see you again. I hope this letter reaches you safely. On this mission, I have uncovered many secrets, secrets that I do not dare write for fear of other finding out.
Secrets? What kind of secrets does he have?
You must destroy this envelope immediately after reading it. I have hidden these messages everywhere around England with several of my work partners after finding them, but I am dying with every word I write.
All around England? I sigh and feel tears threatening to come out as I read on.
I have been captured, and I cannot escape alive. You must know, that I love you dearly, my child. Although we are not of same blood, you are just as dear to me as my own flesh. Cana, I am sorry for leaving you, but I know I have prepared you well. Whether you follow my footsteps as a raven or not, it is your choice. Cana, I love you.
No, no, no! How can Carnell leave me? A sob rips its way out of my mouth and I can feel the Earl's eyes on my back. I restrain any tears from falling and continue to read.
I hope that you will live a bright life, that you will become a happy and free woman. I know you have never met the earl Phantomhive, but I am entrusting you to him. He works as the Queen's watchdog, and may be your greatest asset. I trust him as I trust you, and I need you to live happily and freely. I am sorry, my child, but I do not have much time left.
The handwriting at the bottom of the page grew sloppy and rushed, as if Carnell was running while writing.
I love you, and please remember this. The moment you fall in love is the moment you lose everything. I know this is an impossible request, but with your status and knowledge, people everywhere will try for your hand to get the knowledge and power you have. Trust no one, and don't fall in love. I love you, my daughter.
I clench my fists and the paper wrinkles as tears begin to dot the paper. Carnell's signature was scrawled messily at the bottom of the page.
With love and care,
Carnell Aloister
Unable to hold the tears in anymore, I begin to sob, the envelope fluttering to the floor as I do so.
"C-Carnell," I sob, tears dripping on to the cold stone floor. Dropping to my knees, I clutch the letter close to my heart, hands shaking. Out of the corner of my eye, I see a black blob walk closer, and I feel myself being scooped up by strong arms. With no other thought than despair, I continue to cry, until everything fades to darkness.
