It turned out Stephen with a ph also went to my high school and decided to tell everyone how the mute and president of the school council were a thing.
He's a freshman. Go figure.
Luckily, I have upperclassman privileges and people listened to me when I assured them that "no no we're not dating".
I guess my confession isn't good enough for some people because lunch was full of questions from the boys. And by boys I mean Calum.
"I heard you and Clifford were banging?"
"I thought the rumor was we were dat-"
"So you are banging?"
"What, no! I never said that."
"But you didn't deny it either." Luke (who was still bitter about me "lying" to him about what happened in the janitor's closet) said.
"You should just trust me." I folded my arms.
"I don't trust liars."
"For Pete's sake, Luke!"
"I also don't trust people who don't swear."
It was an endless cycle of my answers not being good enough for all twenty minutes of lunch.
When I told Michael he didn't seem to care.
"So your friends don't believe you?"
"That's what I've been saying for the past ten minutes, Michael."
He leaned back on the park bench, "They sound like pretty shitty friends to me."
"They're nice!"
Michael raised an eyebrow, "Weren't you just complaining about Calum yesterday?"
"Well Calum isn't really my friend."
"He sits with you everyday at lunch."
"Because he's Luke's friend."
"Ah yes, Luke, the one who still doesn't believe that we didn't make out in the janitor's closet after a month of telling him otherwise."
I huffed and crossed my arms.
"Well I mean you don't even sit with me at lunch."
Michael nodded, "Yeah but as I recall you telling me when I gave you my number, 'we're not friends'."
"I didn't say that!"
"Uh, yeah you did."
I tried to defend my month ago self, "Well when you have me your number you were being kind of a butt."
"A butt?" He laughed, "Say it with me, Beth, a-s-s-h-o-l-e."
"I'm not going to swear." I shook my head.
"One day, Bethany Solomon, one day. When we're friends."
