"Mary...Mary, c'mon wake up." I opened my eyes to the bright room. The old curtains on my windows were blowing in the morning wind. I looked up and saw my brother Darry standing over me with his arms crossed looking down at me. I groaned pulling the soft blanket over my head.

"I don't want to go to school." I mumbled. Darry sat on the end of my bed and exhaled loudly, he did that when I annoyed him.

"Now Mary, would Momma let you stay home from school?" he asked

"No." I grumbled back

"Would Dad?" he asked almost jokingly now

"No." I answered back in an annoyed tone. Darry laughed,

"Would Soda or Pony?"

"Soda loves me, he would let me stay home." Darry chuckled under his breath ripping the covers from my body. I shivered. "C'mon Darry," I said standing up looking at him, "Let me stay home just one day, please?" I gave him my best 'cutest little sister in the world' face, but he is hard to crack.

"Nope, your going to school. So are your brothers, so get dressed." he said as he was leaving. I sighed, I hate school. I crossed my small closet bedroom to my mirror. I looked tired, my hair was all tangled and crazy. I hated my hair, I had Pony's hair. It was an ugly light brown that just stayed straight all the time, never did anything. I had my mothers eyes though. I was the only one who got her piercing green eyes. My mom and dad died when I was little. I don't remember it much, but when they did Darry took care of me Soda and Pony. I was really shy when I was little, still am. Soda always tells me "Mary you got such a pretty voice, why don't you talk more?" but I don't like talking.

I put on some shorts and a tee shirt and walked out to the kitchen. Darry was making breakfast, eggs and toast. Pony was reading some stupid book he had just got. And Soda was gobbling down his food like he would never see any again in his life.

"Well is it isn't little Miss I don't want to go to school." Darry said looking at me. Soda looked up and smiled,

"Why wouldn't you want to go to school?" he asked. The reason I didn't want to go was because two weeks ago my boyfriend, Andy, dumped me. I also found out that he had been cheating on me with some girl named Cherry Valance. I never told my brothers about us breaking up, but they knew I had a boyfriend. I turned my head away.

"No reason I guess." I muttered. Pony laughed.

"She just cant wait to get to school and see her boyfriend!" at this Soda and Darry burst out laughing. I felt my face drop, I still loved Andy. It was him who didn't like me. Soda turned and saw me. He stopped laughing immediately.

"What's wrong Mar-Bear?" he asked with careful eyes. Darry and Pony were watching me now too, great. I shifted around in the chair. Looking out the window then back again.

"Mary Elizabeth Curtis, how many times have I told you not to bite your nails?" Darry said. I didn't even realize I was doing it and I quickly pulled my hand down from my mouth.

"Sorry Darry." I said quietly. "I'm gunna go," I said standing up from the table.

"Sit down and eat some breakfast first." Soda said, "and you know I don't like you walking around by yourself in this town, not without one of us." I rolled my eyes, who would ever hurt me. I never talked, nobody knew my name! I continued towards the door.

"Well I have to turn in some papers, for that one class." They were not buying it.

"what class?" Ponyboy asked curiously, a smirk on his face.

"math class." I answered.

"since when do you care about math?" Pony asked.

"I don't know," I said hesitantly. Pony laughed.

"So, you need to go to the school to give papers for a math class, at seven in the morning?" I was upset now

"I don't know Pony, just...bye." and then I walked out the door.
