Chapter four:
The sun shined right on my eyes, turning over in my bed, I looked out the window. Morning has come, and something didn’t feel right. I sat up in my bed; my feet dangling over the side. I looked around the room. Something isn’t right, and I knew it. Grabbing my boots, I walked out of my room heading outside. The air felt thick, looking over to the barns I saw the door was slightly opened. I know it closed it last night. Doing a slow jog, I pressed the bar door open peering inside. Stepping in the barn was silent, completely silent. I walked towards Bibbie’s stable, and peered inside. Nothing. My heart broke, and I looked all around the barn. Where is my Bibbie? I ran outside looking around in a frantic.
“Bibbie!” I screamed out. I ran towards the house darting through the door my steps hard on the wooden floor. Johnny, Gorgi, and papa were sitting at the kitchen table. “Bibbie ain’t in her stables,” I said out of breath. Johnny and Gorgi both looked away, they wouldn’t make eye contact. I stood there, my breathing softening. Shaking my head I closed my eyes tight; staring intently at my papa he was looking straight ahead, looking at nothing. “What did you do,” my voice was barely audible. No one replied. “What did you do?” I screamed louder my eyes tearing.
“Everyone must make a donation to the army Ava,” papa muttered. My breath caught in my throat, a tear dripped down my face. Shaking my head frantically I hit the wall next to me.
“You didn’t stop them!” I screamed at Johnny and Gorgi, “You let them take her!” I cried at papa.
“Ava, don’t be such a child about this,” Papa said merely. I stopped where I was, looking at him in disbelief.
“I’m being a child!” I laughed. I shook my head stepping back, “I can’t believe you,” I whispered. He stood up facing me.
“Everyone has their loses.” Shaking my head tears flowed down my face.
“You’re unbelievable,” I whispered. I stood there, feeling a stranger in my own home.
“It was just a horse Avalon!” He said getting mad. I turned away from him walking towards the front door. “Don’t walk away from me young lady,” he said bitterly. My hand in fists I stopped.
“I’ve always known you didn’t show emotion, but I never thought you could be so cold hearted and…” I stopped trying to find the words. “I don’t know how mama could have been with a man with so much sorrow, so uncaring,” my words lingered. The room was silent. I walked out of the house, my feet moving my body, not knowing where I am going. The loss in my heart, my Bibbie was gone. Taken to war, an evil place, shell be shot at and stabbed, killed. Tears flowing down my face. My feet were wet, and I snapped out of it, realizing I was standing in the river. I looked around and my eyes lingered towards the cave. A soft breeze touched the tears on my cheeks; I wiped them away and slowly walked towards the cave, still walking in the river. I still had my robe on, and my boots, the water soaking my shoes, up to my knees. I stepped inside the cave, darkness surrounded me, and I let out a deep breath.
“Hello?” my voice echoed through the cave. Silence. “I know you are there,” I said louder this time. My voice echoed louder throughout the cave. A shuffle sounded to my right, and my eyes followed the sound. “I don’t wish to hurt you, please I just need someone…” the last part came out as more of a whisper. Tears came down my face. “I have no one, and I need someone,” I sat on the ground bringing my knees up to my chest. Putting my head down I cried to myself. A hand touched my shoulder; I slowly looked up and came face to face with a small little man, a gremlin.
“Hello,” his voice was raspy. Looking at one another, a tear falling down my face, he reached his hand out, I watched him intently his hand softly wiping away the tear. He gave me a warm smile, his teeth where dark, sharp. Any person would be completely petrified of him, but I wasn’t. I smiled back.
