I stared at him like he was insane. After keeping me here for about 4 years, they were finally letting me see my parents.
"Yes, please." I said urgently
"Alright well you need to come to the office first." Prof. Johanson said
I completely forgot about trying to escape, I realized that now I might be getting to see the most important people in my life. I followed Prof. Johanson down the many hallways on the top floor until he opened a door into a grey office. There were a couple other men wearing white lab coats just as Prof. Johanson was, but then there was a woman in a charcoal suit. She smiled at me and came over, introducing herself vaguely as the director, shaking my hand.
"Happy birthday by the way." She said with a smile
"Thank you." I said, returning the smile
"Please have a seat." The director said
We walked over to a set of black couches and sat down. The director seemed very serious about her job, and it almost scared me. Mostly because I didn't know what her job was, although I was sure I was a part of it.
"So, you've been here studying yes?" She asked "Well you've graduated. It's time to go out into the outside world and become an excellent member of society. Better than anyone else. We're so confident that you'll run this nation properly that we've given you a house, fully decorated in your taste and we've given you a bunch of little surprises around the house."
I nodded. I just really wanted to see my parents.
"Alright? So we're going to send you on a private jet back home. And then you're free to live on your life." She said with a smile "Good luck Eric."
I was escorted out by two bots and brought outside. The air was warm on my skin. I looked up and saw the sun and it was a miracle. I thought I would never see it again from being inside for so long. I got inside the limo, and the driver handed me a box. I opened it. Inside was a nice cell phone, probably one of the newest ones since I had never seen anything like it in my life, a passport, a credit card and a state ID and Drivers license. And a note at the bottom.
"Feel free to max out the credit card. It's on us. We'll pay it off once you max it out."
All this was so sudden, I was unsure what to do. I set up the phone and then called my mom's cellphone number.
It was ringing... no answer. I decided to leave a message.
"Hey mom, it's Eric. Call me back, I'm on my way home. I really want to see you and Dad and everyone." I said, then hung up.
I relaxed in the back of the limo, trying to think of what my parents would say. Would they even recognize me? I looked in the reflection of my phone screen. I looked like an adult. A very handsome adult, but still... different.
I played on my phone for an hour before we got to the airport. The limo driver handed me an envelope with all the flight information on a slip of paper. I made my way through the airport, getting to my terminal quickly and getting my information all set and ready to go. When it was time to board the plane, I found out I was riding first class, which was something I had never done before. It was a really long flight, but when we finally touched down, I was ready to run out of the plane.
I strode through the airport, super excited to be home again. Things had changed in the airport, which really wasn't a surprise. I spotted the limo driver with my name on a sign. He lead me to the limo and opened the door. I slipped inside and watched the world pass by me as I was being driven to my new home.
I found that it was a large home, decorated amazingly. I found all the surprises that the director had told me about. Some fancy sports cars, an amazing gaming setup, a ton of technology. I called my mom again, this time she actually picked up.
"Mom?" I asked
"Jacob?" My mom asked
"No, it's Eric." I said
"Eric's gone..." She said
"No, it's really me. How is everybody? I really missed you guys. What all has changed since I was taken? When can I come see you guys?" I asked
"Eric... anytime baby, please come home. We didn't move houses, come see us. I'll call your dad up."She said
I hung up and jogged out to the garage. I grabbed the car keys for the super sleek grey and red sports car, and pulled out of the garage, making my way back to my mom's house. I couldn't stop myself from drumming my fingers on the steering wheel. It was like there was no controlling my anxiety. When I finally pulled into the driveway, I smiled. Our house was the only one on the block that didn't change. We prettied up the flower beds and repaved the driveway, but that was it. I ran up to the door, and my mom opened it for me. We both hugged each other tightly. Then I hugged Jacob and Sam and then my dad. We all started crying because we were so happy that I was back and alive, but so sad that they had lost me at all.
"Eric... what happened to you?" My mom asked
"They made me smarter and stronger. They treated me well while I was there, it was just like school. Except I know all kinds of things now. Just not current events..." I said
"Where did they even take you?" She asked
"To be honest, I don't really know. It doesn't matter to me anymore. I'm home and that's all that I care about." I said
There was more hugging and crying, and then there was going to be a family get together planned that weekend, so everyone could welcome me back.
I told my parents about the house and my plans for my future. I decided to start working for Google, while being a part time musician. They told me that it was going to be really hard for me to keep up with all that, but I assured them that I was going to be ok.
At the end of the night, they didn't want me to go home. They were so afraid of loosing their baby again. I said that they could come and look at my house with me and they agreed. They followed me back and I gave them a tour. They were really amazed by how impressive the house was. I explained that it was provided by wherever I just was and that I didn't have to pay a penny for it. They were a little skeptical, and I really didn't blame them. The people that kidnapped their child was providing them a house? It was a little fishy.
They finally left, and I had the big house all to myself. I went upstairs to the master bedroom and crawled under the covers. Tomorrow, there was going to be a lot of work I needed to do.
