Walking up the driveway was the most nerve racking experience of my life, Haru's motorcycle was gone but his dad's truck was still there. I slowly stepped onto the porch as soundlessly as I could manage. I stared at the door not sure if I should be walking in or knocking, although I suppose I shouldn't have even left. "What am I saying..." I mumbled to myself. I'm a human being, not an object! I grinded my teeth and stood up straighter as I threw open the door and stepped inside. I instantly shrank back as soon as the smell of Haru's home tickled my nose. I definitely should have knocked... I side stepped the door and shut it without a sound. "Where've you been?" A voice made me jump, my heart speed up with nerves that pricked my body all over.
My panick subsided as I turned around to find Kai. "You scared me!" I whined, holding my hand to my chest. He smirked, leaning against the wall. "W-...where is everyone?" I asked, looking past him. "Well, Haru's out looking for you" He sighed, studying me with his eyes. "Oh...I see" I put my shoes to the side in their usual place. "A-and your dad?" I continued. "He's waiting for you over there" Kai gestured to the livingroom. My stomach twisted, in a bad way. "Pffft, I'm just kidding" he laughed, "you should've seen your face!" He breathed, disappearing around the corner. "That's not funny!" I groan, following behind him. I glared at his back as he flopped down on the couch and continued watching his show. "Him and my mom just dropped us off and went out again" I sighed with relief. At least HE didn't know. "So... What's your situation here?" He asked, catching me off guard. "Situation...?" I repeated. He nodded, "I mean, if Haru gets so worried when you aren't here, then there must be something going on..." he glanced at me, his eyes searching mine. I looked for something to say, my mouth open wide. "It's okay if you don't want to talk about it" he quickly added, his face a little red. "If it makes you upset, I don't want to force you" he quickly turned away, the room silent with mutual awkwardness.
He seemed different from Haru, like he was more gentle- although, my first impression of him was very different. "By the way... about earlier, I feel bad. I kinda get like that sometimes when I'm around Haru and I'm sorry for treating you that way" Kai ran a hand through his hair, throwing me a sideways glance. I felt bad for my previous thoughts about him, I thought he would be exactly like Haru but he was sweet. "It's alright," I smiled. "I'm sorry too, for thinking you were mean" I told him honeslty. "Is that so..." Kai's smile faultered for a fraction of a second, so quickly in fact that I thought I imagined it. "I guess that's my own fault" His smile returned and he gazed at me softly. "You can sit down you know" He broke eye contact to look back to the TV, patting the couch expectantly. I took him up on his offer and sat down beside him-- he was watching some ghost hunting show, which completely freaked me out.
Three episodes later, here I was hugging my knees to my chest, constantly glancing around for any 'Shadow People' that may be lurking about. "What is this? A marathon?" I mumbled. "Nope, it's on dvd" Kai said with a yawn. "This is the one where they see an arm!" He cheered. "Is there anyone here with us? Can you speak into the recorder in my hand for us?" The man on the tv asked. "....yes..." a shakey voice answered, making me shiver.
Suddenly, the door flung open, causing me to yelp. Kai and I both turned around to find a frantic looking Haru. "Lucy?" For a moment he looked releaved, confused, and lastly angry. "Where were you!?" He snapped, putting his hands on his hips.
"I went out" I shrugged.
"I see that" He rubbed a hand through his hair. "I've been looking everywhere for you!"
"Well I never asked you to do that" I was getting a little annoyed now.
"Well it's not like you told me that you were going or where"
"Well why should I have to!?"
"Because...Because!"
"You don't own her" Kai grumbled. I was surprised that he stood up for me but instead of thanking him i continued to glare at Haru.
"Shut up, nobody asked you" he bitched, throwing his helmet at Kai who jumped to his feet. "Nobody asked you to come in here and act like a dick either" Kai threw the helmet back at his brother. The honey-haired boy glared at us, his jaw clenching, teeth grinding. Without another word Haru spun on his heals and headed up the stairs. I let out a huff as I flopped down on the couch. "You know...usually I wouldn't stand up for that guy and I'll admit he was just being an asshole, but he was really worried about you" Kai switched off the tv, giving a quick wave he said goodnight and followed the way Haru went. I let out a sigh, flopping over to lay on the couch in silence. I get that Haru was worried, I guess. But then again that doesn't give him the right to treat me like he owns me! Although, I guess technically he did...but I'm not property!
I chewed on a strand of hair that had fallen onto my face, preplexed about who was 'right' in this scenario. Maybe I just didnt get Haru at all. I mean, most of the time he had an attitude but he also looked out for me a lot. He's even planning to take me to the amusement park. I groaned into the couch cushion. Bitting my lip, I hurriedly ran up the stairs-- stopping outside of his room. "Haru..." I mummbled, walking in. He layed on his bed, facing the wall quietly. I crouched down beside the bed, lighly holding on to the edge. "I'm sorry... I guess I was being too sensitive. I know you were just worried and I'm sorry for leaving without saying anything" without a word, he sat up looking down at me. "Me? Worry?" He poked me in the forehead, making me flinch. "Don't be silly, what could I possibly be worried about" he smirked, his left eyebrow twitching. "Oh, come on. Why else would you go looking for me?" I rolled my eyes. "Who put that idea into your head?" He scoffed.
"You did, genious! You said it yourself!"
"You're delusional, I simply went on a joy ride" He waved a hand around, dismissing the idea.
"Who are you kidding, you were totally worried. You were probably completely petrified by the idea of me never coming back, weren't you" I joked. I waited for a reply, but was answered with a strange look in his eyes. "That was a joke..." I giggled awkwardly. Haru turned away, facing the wall once again with a very light chuckle. "Yea, I know" he mummbled. I stood up, confusion clouding my head. "I'm gonna go change..." I told him as I rumaged through my bag for my pajamas. After retreaving them, i ran to the bathroom to change, brush my teeth, brush my hair, etc. When I came back Haru was already asleep, his light breaths the only sound to be heard. I quickly put my stuff back in my bag and turned the light off, blindly making my way to the bed. Settling in, I realized how large the bed really was. I turned to face his back, mesmerized by the rhythmic rise and fall of his shoulders, totally oblivious as to how creepy that seemed. I quickly turned away from him, squeezing my eyes shut. For whatever reason I was suddenly too aware of him, every time he shifted was magnified like headphones stuck on max volume. I sighed, willing for sleep to come.
