Silence

"You're alone;
You're on your own.
So what?
Have you gone blind?
Have you forgotten what you have
And what is yours?

Glass half empty,
Glass half full.
Well, either way
You won't be going thirsty.
Count your blessings,
Not your flaws..."

The room became quiet as the girl stopped singing. Her eyes continued to stare at the opposite wall, seeing things that only she could, with an expressionless face. Her body was sitting in her room against the closed door, but her mind was somewhere completely different.

"Does my singing ever bother you, Ethan?" She suddenly said, position not changing.

The room stayed silent, except for the ever slight sound of her breath and the soft humming of the ceiling fan. She expected it to, though. There was a no one else in the room, even in her imagination.

The boy named Ethan that she mentioned no one could see, no one could hear, no one could touch. Simply, he did not exist.

She pondered about him until her mind replayed the nightmare she had had that morning.

She was sitting in a long hallway made of red sandstone with an angry-looking father towering above her. He laughed at her pathetic look and walked around a corner, saying he was going to get something to beat her with. She was terrified out of her wits and took off running the other direction, stopping for a moment to get the few dear things she had before continuing. She felt tears start to prick her eyes as she heard his shouts behind her, knowing he was chasing. She risked a glance back and saw he was indeed running after her, and was holding a belt. She let the tears fall as she ran for her life.

That was when she had woken up and heard her heart beating like crazy. It was true that her father was quite rough with her, but she was sure he would never go that far. Currently, he was down in Atlanta, Georgia, for a job thing, and her mom was also at her work. Now, she didn't see the man's face clearly, but her mind labeled him as her father.

{A/N: Up until now, this has been things that actually happened to me} She then brought herself out of her thoughts and blinked, unsure of what to do. And so she sat, pondering, the silence once again reminding her that she was alone. She looked at the clock on her nightstand and saw that it was 1:34 PM, so she decided she would make some lunch, discarding that she had ever said a word.

She got up and opened her door, exiting her room and going downstairs into the kitchen on the main level of the house. Since she was on her own for lunch, she simply made a sandwich.

This girl was just a normal, 13 year old girl, just like any other, except she sometimes talked to herself out loud or pretended to talk to Ethan. Everyone has an imaginary friend at some point, right? She thought so.

After finishing her lunch, she cleaned up and was then faced with the same challenge from earlier: what to do now. She could read a book, draw, watch something, or play outside. After a little of thinking, she decided to go outside.

This is where it all began. This girl, isn't as normal as she thinks she is. She is just the opposite.

And this girl's name, is Alyssa Brooks.
