Sam’s P.O.V

“Who’s Pepper?” Pepper asked with a frown on her small face. What does she mean ‘Who’s Pepper?’ she hit her head when I pulled her into the backseat but I didn’t think it was that hard, it wasn’t it was more of a tap. But with her seatbelt on I failed to notice her head get whiplash and hit the back seat door as the car jerked to a stop killing my father and crushing my sister’s foot even more than it was already broken when she fell mid routine.

“Uh… This will be difficult” Doctor Azure said, “She appears to have memory loss, quite a bit if I do say myself… “He turned to the small girl on the bed as he spoke. “What year is it?”

“… I don’t know…” she replied in a slight whisper.

“When were you born?” he asked.

“… I don’t know…” she replied again.

“Why are you here?”

“… I don’t know… You’re a doctor tell me what’s wrong.” She whispered. I moved so I could take a seat next to her on the bed and she moved back into the wall on the bed obviously startled by me.

“Sorry… Do you know who I am?” I asked in a soft voice, trying not to scare her again.

“No… all I remember is I was in a car… and that light… “She spoke in such a tone that suggested the light scared her beyond knowing. This is bad, she doesn’t remember. She doesn’t know me but I am her half-brother, her dad is my dad. He tracked me down after he lost his wife and wanted me to know Pepper just in case anything happened to him or her. She is only 15 and she doesn’t know what happened the other day with the crash, she doesn’t remember her dad dying or her life at all.

“Can I speak to you outside Sam?” the doctor asked in a soft tone obviously remembering not to startle her for a second time. Getting up off the bed I dropped her hand, I didn’t realise I held while talking with her. She was so small and defenceless, so human. Walking to the door I turned to make sure she was fine, she was looking at me again, but something flashed in her eyes, remembrance.

She started gasping for air; she was talking big gulps of air trying to calm her.

She knows.

Pepper’s P.O.V

I remember, not a lot but the crash and what happened before. But other than the broken ankle I don’t remember a thing. Before the dance I remember nothing. Nothing at all.

“… Y-you saved m-me…” I said gasping for breath, i couldn’t breathe. It felt like something was crashing down on me, more memories flew through the thick wall holding back my subconscious. My dad’s wet face, his face was covered in blood. It wasn’t normal blood it was a deep dark colour that showed death, the blood of a dead person. The doctor rushed to my side, with a mask in his hand. He put it over my mouth and it helped me control my breathing, although it was rough it was better than before, I could breathe again but the wall was still in place like a wall trapping me from remembering my life.

Slowly I started to calm down enough for me to breathe normally, “Who are you?” I asked the man that saved me. His faced showed sadness, a sadness that I hadn’t known till this day, a sadness of loss and grief.

“I’m Sam Uley, I’m your half-brother” he said in a slow, careful voice obviously trying not to get me to hypervenalate again.

“Why don’t I remember” I asked in a pitiful voice and clung to his side as I cried myself into an exhausted state and fell asleep with dried tears still on my face.

I woke to the same sounds after a dream. I was about 6 and I was playing in a small square field with a man and a woman, she looked sick and the man looked sad before we started to play and dance. The woman had elegance to her; she took steps towards me with the utmost confidence and the best posture. He warm chocolate brown eyes held mine as she showed me the next move, a small jump in the air was recorded by the man with a large black video camera. The dream slowly changed to the girl and the man. The woman was lying in a hospital bed with tubes sticking out of her, the little girl was sobbing on the man and the man was sobbing over his lost love.  That was when I woke up.

I hadn’t realised I was sobbing in my sleep, with warm hands patting my back as I slept stopped and then started again but only in a comforting rubbing across my back I turned to see the splitting image of the man in my dream. With warm eyes that held concern and sorrow he embraced me in a hug that hurled into my sobbing into his shirt again.

“The doctor said you would remember things, in your dreams.” She stated in a thick heavy voice that showed as much as his face exhaustion from lack of sleep.

“I-I remember some woman, she was playing with me in a field with a man that looks like you… she disappeared and we were in a hospital, s-she was sick, on the bed, s-s-she was dead…” I whispered as Sam held me tighter in a warm embrace. He stroked my back again in a comforting way as I sobbed again.

“I’m sorry i-I ruined your shirt” I said as I looked at him, his shirt had a large water stain down the front, and shoulder.

“Don’t worry about it… Ugh… The doctor said you were fine to go home, but with all that has happened I want you to come live with me and my fiancée, she is here but I thought it best she waits to meet you, I don’t want to stress you out or anything…” he said noticeably rambling.

“I want to meet her, you’re the only family I have,” I said, my tears drying up. “Please?”

“I’ll go get her.” And with that he walked out the door. He was back a few seconds later with a pretty girl who had scars across the left side of her face.

“Pepper, this is Emily, my fiancée,” he said as if he was proud to show her off. She rushed to the side of my bed and embraced me in a hug that almost had me crying again as it was making the wall determinate again. “I’m so sorry, it’s nice to meet you could have been better circumstances but you know… “She said as she held me tight like a mother would, look after a young child.

“I’m fine, confused, sad and a little hungry but other than that fine.” I said in a weak voice as she still held me. She broke off the hug to lightly kiss my forehead and sit next to me on my bed.

“I’m a little tired; I’m going to sleep now, if you don’t mind sorry, it was nice meeting you too.” I said as I feel asleep again.
