Amritha woke slowly. Not to an alarm. Not to noise. But to unfamiliar quiet. For a few seconds, she didn't move. The ceiling above her wasn't hers. The air carried a faint trace of last night-something warm, like broth and tired laughter still lingering in the room.

Then it clicked. Sam's apartment. She exhaled softly and turned her head slightly. The guest room was neat, simple, untouched in the way someone prepares a space for another person without making it feel temporary. A folded blanket rested at the edge of the bed something she definitely hadn't arranged.

She sat up, hair slightly messy, blinking herself fully awake.
For a moment, she just stayed there.
Then-quiet footsteps outside. The door opened before she could fully register it. Sam stood there. Casual t-shirt, hair slightly unstyled in a way that suggested he had been awake for a while. In his hand-two mugs.

And the smell followed him in immediately.
Breakfast.

She blinked. "You cooked?"

He leaned slightly against the doorframe. "Define cooked."

"That usually means food that isn't a concept."

He walked in and placed one mug on the side table. "It's edible. That's the standard I aimed for."

She looked past him. On the counter outside-simple breakfast. Toast. Fresh fruit. Tofu scramble with peppers and herbs-nothing fancy, but clearly intentional.

Her expression shifted instantly. "You made all this?"

He shrugged. "You were asleep. I wasn't going to wake you up just to argue about whether I'm capable of boiling things."

She stared at him for a second longer than necessary.

He glanced at her. "It's breakfast. Don't oversell it."

"I'm not overselling." She stood up slowly.

"I'm assessing."

"That sounds more threatening than I intended breakfast to be." She walked past him into the kitchen area, still slightly sleepy but fully aware now.

"You cook like a responsible person," she said.

"I am a responsible person."

She looked at him. "That's debatable."

He smirked faintly. "Eat first. Debate later."

They ate together in a silence that didn't feel awkward. It felt... early. Soft. Like the world hadn't fully started demanding anything from them yet.

At some point, she said quietly, "This is actually really good."

He didn't look up. "I know."

She nodded once. "Annoyingly competent."

"Coming from you, that's high praise."

"It is."

When she finished, she stood near the sink for a second longer than needed, holding her mug. Then she turned.

"Sam."

He looked up. She hesitated-not long. Just enough to make it noticeable. Then she walked over and hugged him. Not dramatic. Not teasing. Just firm. A real thank you. For yesterday. For the food. For the space. For not making anything complicated.
