Chapter One
"Hey! Hey, Alecia!"
I scanned the crowd, searching for the person belonging to the voice that was calling my name. There, the blonde walking toward me. "Ariel, hey! How was your summer?" As she drew closer I saw the under side of her hair. "Oooh, you got red! It looks cool!"
"Thanks! My summer was great! I went to Europe again.. But I'll tell you about that later. Have you seen Em?"
"Not yet... Oh, there she is, with Bull!" I waved at the couple. "Hey, guys! Havnt seen you in a while!" Even though Emily and Bull (short for Barnibus... IKR?) live just around the corner from me, I still hardly saw them.
They boh greeted us with huge smiles. "Hey guys! Guess what? My aunt finally let me get my license!"
"Sweet! I'm guessing you don't have a car yet though." I knew Emily's aunt didn't want to pay for a car.
"No, but she's working." Bull answered. "I still think you work too much" He turned to Emily. As they started talking, Ariel rolled her eyes at me. Even before they started dating, those two had a habit of shutting other people out. I guess things havn't changed much.
Today is September 2nd, the day before the first day of school. This is the day everyone comes by to get their scheduals and meet their teachers for the new year. It is also the day everyone meets up with their friends and complains about school starting. It's 10:00 and it is bright out. Soon enough it will be dark and cold in the morning, with people rushing from one class to the next, trying to get out of the rain. That's Washington for you. For now, I'll cling to the rest of the last of my warm free summer day.
There are a lot of people outside and in the commons. I even saw a few people in the PAC. I'll probably stop by later with Ariel so we can rejoice in the cool ceiling designed to bounce back sound. We will end up singing loudly and Em will roll her eyes and go hide in a corner with Bull. But right now I'm navigating my way through the crowd with Ariel, and Emily and Bull are trailing behind us. We arrive at the hallway with lockers, near the library.
"So you got the same locker this year,Em?"
"Yup. I guess cleaning it out last year was pointless!"
I look around the hallway lined with red lockers. This place held some memories. I laugh. "Hey Em! Will I be your book dealer again this year?" I went almost every morning to check out a book for Emily. She grinned.
"Probably! I don't have time to go to the library!"
"More like you're too lazy!" Ariel jumped in.
"You're one to talk!"
"It's easier to just read on my Kindle!"
"IT'S NOT THE SAME!" Emily and I both chime together.
We all start laughing. I suddenly realize that we are now outside, walking toward the commons. We are all really loud, and I self consciously glance around. Then, someone's shoulder hit mine. I hadn't been paying attention and I ran into some one. I hear a soft 'sorry' and the they're gone. All I got was the raven hair and the British accent. Wait, what?!
"Hey, Alecia!" I look up, distracted. "You suck!" It's Damian.
"I'm surprised you're not in juvie for pick pocketing!" I joke.
"Yeah, well. Hmm I bet you're still on crack, right?" He comes right back.
"Of course." I respond sarcastically. This was old. " you know, someday, someone is going to think I really am on crack because of you...."
That night, at home, I think about the boy with the accent. Had I imagined it? He was talking really softly. And I had walked away quickly, catching up with everyone else. Maybe... Nah. Our town is too small to have something exciting like an exchange student.
