I rode behind Barry as the two of us sped towards the main site. Screams and shrieks were heard miles away, which didn't help my daunting nerves at all. With adrenaline surging through my veins, I hopped off my motorbike and gripped my shotgun. Barry halted to a stop swiftly and joined me. The two of us jogged to the resort, where the chaos unfolded before our eyes.
"Jesus," Barry mumbled and both of us snapped into actions. Pterosaurs were soaring above head. They snarled and picked at the defenceless tourists. I loaded my shotgun rapidly while eying the attacking creatures.
"We need to get the people inside!" I shouted and placed the shotgun firmly against my shoulder. With my cheek resting on its stock, I began to shoot at the Pterosaurs that had gotten hold of the tourists. Barry covered my back as I advanced. We moved as a pair. People parted for us as we moved further into the main site. When there was only the screaming crowd left in front of us, I turned to Barry. "Get them inside! I will cover you!"
Barry nodded gravelly and moved in front of the crowd. He started shouting instructions, pointing at the main hall and gesturing for everyone to follow him. Soon enough, the Pterosaurs had located us and began to close in towards us. Their slits focused on the meaty meal before them. I set my jaw and reloaded my shotgun. "Heads up!" I warned Barry and began another shooting round.
Throwing a quick glance behind me, I was assured by the sight of half of the crowd pouring into the main hall. Barry readied his shotgun and took down few of the pterosaurs that were closer to the crowds.
I snapped around when a boy screamed for his life next to me. A pterosaur had landed right on him, his beak dangerously close to the boy's petrified face as he tried to keep the creature at bay. Dropping my shotgun, I pulled a dagger out from my waist belt and dove for the pterosaur. "Stacey!" Barry cried out instantly. Oblivious to the chaos around me, I struggled with the pterosaur while the kid broke free. The creature screeched and snapped, its beak nearing my face when I tried to keep a good grip on my dagger. With a grunt, I pushed the tip of my dagger into its neck, and drove it further beneath its tough skin.
Its body went limp. I pushed it off me and attempted to find my footings, only to be knocked off by another pterosaur clawing at my back. I gaped, feeling the cut blistered onto my skin. Barry was furiously firing away while trying to aid me, but he too himself was occupied by numerous pterosaurs. He could barely keep himself free.
I set my jaw hard at the growling pain on my back and rolled to the side. The open wounds on my back grind against the floor. I could almost imagine the tear widening. The pterosaur hissed and stabbed its beak towards my shoulder blade. Closing my hands around its neck, I tried to push it away. It wiggled and almost landed its beak on my eye. I gasped and felt for my dagger, which had been dropped during my struggle with the last attacker.
Then suddenly, a gunshot rang through the atmosphere. The creature in my hand stilled, and I watched with wide eyes as its head rolled aside. Gasping for breaths, I rolled out from underneath it and stabled myself on my four. I stared hard at the floor as the close call with death relived within my head. A warm hand fell on my shoulder but I was still out of breaths. "Stacey," he said, his voice filled my world. "Are you with me?"
Was I? There were so much going on around me. The tears on my back were prickling with pain, and I could feel the sticky blood running along my skin. I glanced up alas, meeting Owen's eyes and somehow, my heart calmed.
I nodded and he helped me up. He picked up my dagger and handed it over while Barry covered us. The pterosaurs were mostly done with now. I sucked in a deep breath and snatched my shotgun off the floor. "You did good, Stacey," Owen remarked but I paid no attention. Alerted, I steadied my shotgun rapidly and pointed it at Owen's direction.
With the shotgun pressed against my shoulder, and my cheek upon the stock, I fired without thinking twice. The pterosaur that had been nearing the man dropped to the floor.
His face paled, but his eyes relaxed at once when he realised I wasn't indeed trying to kill him. He glanced behind him and saw the pterosaur's body. "Thanks," he murmured and I shrugged. Turning to Barry, I asked, "Is everybody in?"
He gazed around us. "Seems like it."
I shrugged the shotgun onto my shoulder and winced at the seeping pain on my back. Frowning, Owen locked gaze with me. His glints were intense as he questioned, "Are you okay?"
"Have been better," I murmured and eyed behind him. Claire was approaching us with two boys by her. I waved, a grin stretching on my face when I took in the fact that my friend and her nephews were safe.
"Stacey!" Clair's eyes were bright and wide when she took me in. To my surprise, she abandoned the two boys by her side and ran up to me. Without thinking twice, she wrapped me in a tight hug. I gaped at her warmth and the bursting pain on my back. "I'm so sorry for this mess. I shouldn't have agreed with the plan. Thank god you're alright-"
She pulled back with bloodstained hands. Gawking down at her limps, she stared at me with her mouth opened. Owen swore and grabbed my arm. "You're hurt," he grumbled and glanced behind me to examine my wounds. Barry oohed when he saw the gushing wounds on my skin. The back of my top was probably ruined too. Owen was silent for a long time while the others drank in the sight around us. "We will get you to a safe place," Owen said alas. His voice was soft but determined, and he watched me tentatively as if he was trying to see if I was hiding anything other wound from me. "I will make sure of it."
I tried a smile and shook my head. "I will manage. I need to help you all."
"What's our next move then?" Barry questioned, breaking the charm which was definitely a good idea. We had more urgent matters at hand. Owen's hands were on mine as he pondered in thoughts. His eyes ran over my knuckles and spotted the bruises instantly. He had a sharp observation alright.
Arching a quizzical eyebrow at me, Owen waited for my reply. I sighed, and explained, "I punched Victor. It was fun."
Claire gaped and slapped a hand over her mouth. The two boys next to her grinned from ear to ear, as if they had any idea who Victor was. Barry laughed hoarsely and crossed his arms approvingly. "It was fun to watch as well," he added in.
Shaking his head in disapproval, Owen could barely keep a smile off his face. "Oh, Stacey," he murmured and pulled me into the big arms of his. Carefully keeping the area of my back clear, he kissed the top of my head, which earned a few awhs from our company.
Blushing, I pushed Owen back and turned to Barry. "Let's go," I muttered at our friend. Behind me, Owen smirked and nodded at Claire. Winking at the boys, Owen announced, "You heard her: let's go!"
