The dragons taloned wings clung to the sheer rock face. Those razor sharp talons found every crevice and crack to cling to. The black scales would be imperceptible in the dark nights and with the right rock the creature would appear as if it was more rock than a living thing. The back legs helped cling to the rock of the mountain whose roots reach deep beneath the earth.
The prey below didn't see him.
The great golden eyes were closed in rest as the breaths rumbled like thunder through its chest resonating out of the beast. The breath fogged the air as it went exited the quivering nostrils. The mighty horns and spines along with its teeth told the dragons age. This was a dominate make in his prime completely at ease in his territory.
Those below couldn't hear him for it sounded like thundering skies from below.
What was odd was the woman legs curled around prongs from the saddle just at the base of the dragons neck. Her slim firm body stretched out unworried for the spikes touching her skin. Her hair like blackest ebony flowed beneath her head as she hung there down the back of the dragon. Her skin was as pale as the snow exuding its own light. Lips red as blood quirked at the sound of the unconcerned below. Her eyes that simmered like blue and gold fire were closed. She was a queen with absolute confidence on her throne.
It was the calm before the storm.
With no prelude or any sign the talons detached from the rock face and the mighty wings stretched out as the body of the dragon twirled and dove away from the rock face. There was barely a flap that could be heard from his wings. The woman righted her self almost perfectly in time with the dragon. Two bodies almost appeared to be one.
The dark figures below knew nothing but the fire as the beast opened its fanged maw and let loose blue fire down upon them. His eyes saw everything, focusing in and out with perfect clarity. The woman perfectly balanced her thighs clenched tight against the smooth worn leather of her the saddle as her eyes found the perfect target.
Her nimble hands drew back the mighty bow and the arrow flew. Her eyes just as keen as the dragon though her targets were small and scampering about below. Her arrows flew true. The mighty wings thumped against the air fanning the flames into an inferno. Even as another blast of dragon fire befell the foul beasts.
Just as quickly as the two came with a mighty roar that echoed for miles they disappeared in the mist shrouded peaks. They left fire and ruin behind them. There was a meeting of an old friend and she had a very far way to go. She was reluctant to go for a meeting of old friends most that still lived wanted to kill her. This particular friend however wasn't one to kill her but his perchance for mischief would likely do the trick.
'To the west my friend we must make all haste'
'Very well' the rumbled reply echoed in her mind. Though she felt that his mind was somewhere else. Somewhere to the east where the only other dragon lay ensconced in his stolen gold.
'The worm will keep my friend. We need not worry about the filth' she reassured.
Though he didn't reply she felt as if what she said didn't pertain to his worries. He worried that his hatch kin would be a part of this strange meeting. Though the dragon was patient he could wait.

'There was a lady in the north, most exquisite and unique,
One glance the city fell, second glance the nation collapsed.
I wonder, if such exquisite beauty can ever be seen again?'Those words haunted throughout the long endless centuries. How long had it been in truth? Most days he couldn't know. How long has this demon haunted him? The blue eyes that almost seemed to stare to the soul of things opened with a gasp a the flash of song and the face that danced before his minds eye.
He rose quickly as if escaping the bed would escape the haunting dreams he had. Bare skin barely affected by the cold gleamed in the predawn light as he rose from the bed. There was no rest there for him now.
Almost against his will he was drawn to the chest there a the bottom of his closet. A only three letters rested inside, they hadn't been separated very much during the time that they knew one another. There was also an ornate platinum box covered in diamonds clarified with dragon fire inside that lay what he was looking for. He gave the insides of the small chest another cursory glance over. There were far more in the box than just letters and containment boxes.
His heart couldn't bear to glance through it all after he had done so the first time. Too much betrayal and love lost dwelled amongst those precious hated objects. Reminders of a dream that he had hoped would become a reality.
'It was only ever a dream'
From the bejeweled box he saw the stone that lay within. No larger than his hand it was the color of the purest silver glinting in the candle light. It wasn't a metal or a gem stone but something else entirely. What exactly he had never found out.
'It all fell apart after that'
She had once said the gift she gave him was the most precious that any of her people could give. The gift only fit for a man worthy of her love. She said the stone would be much like worry beads. Relaxing him of his stress by letting his mind work through problems while he rolled the stone one way or the other.
He had never used it or laid eyes on it after that day until now.
"What are you?" He pondered gazing at the stone in the early predawn wrapped in his robe.
When a servant called him from the room with an urgent message from his son the stone was forgotten in his haste. For the first time centuries the stone felt the warmth of the sun on its shell. It gleamed in the sunlight shining through the window.
Inside life stirred anew after many long long centuries of waiting now it was time.
