"Oh, I don't know why you're not there
I give you my love, but you don't care
So what is right and what is wrong?
Give me a sign"

Orphaned since he was born, Tate never knew what it felt like to love and be loved. He dismissed any affection from the caretakers of the orphanage as a sign of pity for him.

Not a few months later though, when all was lost for him and it felt like his senses were already numbed, a great news hit him.

Someone was willing to adopt him.

After an awful miscarriage of the mother, she had decided not to go through all of it again and just adopt. And so his telltale began.

Or so he thought.

They had a daughter. Chestnut colored hair, brown eyes, and small frame. At that moment he knew he could be a big brother to her, to protect her at all cost and shower her with love every child deserve.

They spent most of their time playing on the front yard chasing the family dog, Hailey. They'd play on the treehouse their dad built on the strong oak tree near Tate's bedroom window. Pretend to be parents of Violet's stuffed animals and kids would tease them about how close they are compared to other brothers and sisters, but they would just shrug it off.

Until 7th grade came around the corner of their lives.

It was lunch time and he heard shouting and howling coming from the cafeteria. Rumor had it that a fight broke out between two girls. They were throwing not only punches and scratches, but also food.

When he entered the room, he knew his instincts were right.

Violet.

She was getting ganged up by a girl and a boy. The boy had her hair scrunched around his fist while the girl slapped Violet's face repeatedly.

Another girl jumped right in and threw pasta on Violet's face and he knew had to step in... so he did. He grabbed the short Asian girl by the hair and dragged her away from Violet. He did the same thing with the blonde.

The other kid was tough, though, in his opinion. He wouldn't let go of his sister. Tate tried to calm himself down, but then the kid started a some sort of cheer and soon the whole cafeteria joined in with the medley.

"Tate and Violet kissing on a tree. I N C E S and T" it grew louder and louder and then Violet started crying. Tate couldn't bare the sight of seeing her little sister like that.

Out of nowhere, his fist balled up and punched the smug-face kid straight in the eye and didn't stop until he got one for himself too. Obviously, all three of them got in trouble and were sent to the principal's office. Needless to say Violet didn't talk to him for days and both of them were grounded by their parents.

He didn't know what he did wrong. All he did was save her.

A few years later, they were back on good terms, but not as close as before. They would pass each other down the hallway and some kids would start snickering. Violet held her head down.

As time went by, she mastered the skill of not acknowledging Tate's presence anymore. As if he never existed in her world.

She ejected him out of her life and found new friends. Sometimes he even overheard them bad mouthing him and what pained him the most was that Violet agreed to their judgements. She never stepped in, just like he did for her. She forgotten about the brother she spent her low days with. Whom she shared her nightmares and whimpers with during a thunderstorm.

He accepted her decision though as long it makes her happy about it.
