It was already well into the evening when the structure was failing. Then the sound changed. It wasn't a few shots. It was everywhere.
Gunfire echoed through Alexandria, mixing with the unmistakable sound of the dead flooding the streets. From where Nathan stood, he could see movement between the houses — too many shadows, too many bodies.
The walls had failed. The walkers were inside. Everyone moved at once. There was no hesitation anymore. No confusion. Everyone knew what to do when the dead came.
Fight.
Protect.
Survive.
Nathan fired into the crowd, helping clear a path for the others when suddenly something cut through the chaos. A voice. A familiar voice.
"Hey!"
Nathan froze.
His head snapped toward the sound.
No.
That wasn't possible.
"Over here!"
Another burst of gunfire followed. Nathan's stomach dropped. "Glenn!"
He saw him.
Halfway surrounded.
Trying to hold his ground while walkers closed in from every direction. Nathan didn't think. He just moved. He raised his weapon and started firing, taking down the walkers closest to Glenn.
"Glenn!"
More shots. More bodies dropping. But there were too many. "Nathan!" Maggie shouted. She was already running. Her face had changed the second she saw him. Glenn. Alive. But trapped.
"No!" she yelled.
Glenn turned toward her. "Maggie, stay back!"
He fought through another walker, shoving it away as he tried to reach them. "Come on!"
Nathan kept shooting, moving forward. But every time they cleared one area, more walkers filled the space. "Just go!" Glenn shouted. "Get over!"
Maggie refused to move. "Glenn!"
"Go!"
Nathan saw the panic in Glenn's face. Not fear for himself. Fear for her. That was worse. A walker lunged. Glenn barely stopped it. Nathan tried to reach him, but the crowd between them was growing thicker.
Then—
A roar of gunfire tore through the street.
Not a pistol.
Not a rifle.
Something heavier.
The walkers around Glenn dropped as bullets ripped through them.
Nathan looked up.
Abraham and Sasha were behind automatic weapons, clearing the path. Abraham grinned. "Can you get the gate?" Even in the middle of everything, he looked almost amused. "Appreciate it, pal."
Sasha moved quickly, grabbing Maggie and pulling her back from the crowd. "Come on, we need to move!" Maggie kept looking over her shoulder. "Glenn!"
"I'm right here!" Glenn yelled back.
For a second, Nathan just stood there, watching them.
Glenn.
Maggie.
Alive.
Then he heard a familiar sound behind him.
The truck door opening.
