".....and this is our permanent resident." Dr White indicated to the man through the glass.
The new nurse looked through the window into the small room. It had one large bed in the middle with all the monitors and tubes running from the array of machines into the young man lying still under the thin, brilliant white sheets. Sitting next to him in a large armchair was a young lady.
The Doctor continued his explanation,"The young man is Matthew, the girl is Connie his sister. About two years ago, in fact it will be two years exactly come tomorrow, he was involved in a really bad car crash.
He had just passed his driving test and was taking his mother, father and sister for a ride down by the side of the park. He was driving quite slowly when suddenly a car came round the first bend quite quickly and swerved right into his side of the road.
Matthew swung the steering wheel round, harshly and due to the light rain his car swerved violently and hit the barrier on the side of the road, his car scraped along the edge then due to the fact that he really had little experience driving, he must have tried to correct the car but ended up pulling away and then lost control, the car bounced back into the barrier and flipped over a number of times before landing to rest on the other side."
"Oh how awful." Exclaimed the nurse.
"It gets worse." Continued the Doctor. "Connie had been knocked out for a few moments, when she came to all she could see was blood everywhere. Her mother started moving, her legs were badly broken but she was alive, she started to struggle with her seat belt to let herself out but it was stuck.
Connie reached over to the front to help her father but he wasn't moving at all, she tried to feel for a pulse but there was nothing. Her father was dead. Her brother was just sitting there, with blood all over his head, she felt for a pulse, he had one.
She pushed open her door and managed to get out of the mangled wreck of the car, she went to the front and calling for her mother to hurry up and help her she started to try and drag her brother from the wreckage.
Another car drove past, saw the accident and stopped further up, two young men ran to the car and started helping Connie. They saw smoke coming from the engine, one of them called the police and explained what had happend whilst the other helped get her brother out of the car.
Her mother was stuck, they couldn't release the seat belt and her door was so smashed they could open it much.
Thankfully the ambulance came quickly, they checked her father but pronounced him dead. Then they tried to get her mother out of the car. Unfortunately the car then exploded into flames, everyone had to back away, Connie raced back towards the car screaming for her mother. The young man held tightly onto her as they all listened to the screams of the mother as the flames engulfed the car.
That day she lost her mother and father and her brother fell into a coma. He hasn't woken up yet. She won't agree to turn the machines off. She can't. He is all that remains of her family."
The doctor sighed. Life could be so cruel sometimes.
"She comes every Sunday without fail. Sits by his bed and talks to him for a couple of hours, then goes home"
"But what about the other driver, the one that caused the accident?" asked the nurse.
"No idea." Replied the doctor. "He just drove off, didn't even stop to see if he could have helped."
"What a horrid person!" exclaimed the nurse.
