Chapter Seven

Before I knew it, Sunday was over and I was waking up to the blaring sound of my alarm. I turned it off rolled out of bed. As I rubbed my eyes and started to finally become aware of my surroundings, my heart started to beat fast again, only this time it was out of excitement. Today was the first day of my new job and finally I was able to fulfil my dream of becoming a teacher. Well, sort of. I was the assistant teacher but that was still a step in the right direction.

I hadn’t met the main teacher yet but was asked to go in an hour earlier to meet him and get used to the classroom and how things worked. I quickly jumped into the shower and in record time was out. I always did everything fast when I was excited. I pulled on a white blouse with a black suit jacket and black suit pants. I pulled my hair up into a ponytail and applied light make up. When I emerged from the bathroom I saw the kitchen light was on and there was a burning smell. I walked into the kitchen to find Tyler waving smoke out the window.

“What happened?” I asked looking into the sink where there were burnt remnants of, well, I had no idea what it was.

“Well, you see, funny story actually. I was going to surprise you with a cooked breakfast for your first day at work but I uh…” Tyler scratched the back of his neck,

“You burnt it?” I guessed, throwing the mess into the bin, “What exactly was it?”

“Bacon”

“Bacon!?” I asked, incredulously ,  “How can you burn bacon like that? That has got to take some skill!”

“Well, I may have started writing and forgot to check on the bacon” He grinned, sheepishly, holding up his notebook.

“You really can’t cook!” I laughed as I rinsed off the burnt remnants of Tyler’s attempt at cooking.

“You may have to teach me”

“I’m not sure if I’m fit to teach someone who burns bacon”

“Hey! I’m a good student!”

“Yeah, sure” I grabbed a yogurt from the fridge and sat at the counter, Tyler soon doing the same.

“Why are you up so early anyway? Don’t writers sleep in until midday normally?”

“I wanted to support you on your first day at work!” My heart skipped a beat and I smiled,

“Thank you, Tyler, but next time leave the cooking to me”

“Or I could just leave it to the dairy people. Anyway, are you excited?”

“Very! I’ve wanted to be a teacher since I was kid”

“Why did you choose English teaching?”

“I can speak Japanese and love Japan so I wanted to get some experience here before going over there. I think I might go next year”

“You can speak Japanese?” Tyler exclaimed,

“Uh, yeah. Well not fluently but I can at least have conversations. About eighty percent of my friends are Japanese so I get plenty of practice”

“Man, that’s so cool. I want to be able to speak another language”

“Then study one! Anyway, I’m off, wish me luck” I grabbed my bag and walked to the entrance where I pulled on my black high heels.

“Good luck, knock em dead” I grinned a grabbed my keys,

“Have a good day, Tyler” I opened the door and stepped outside. As the door closed I couldn’t help but feel a little lonely. Tyler would never be able to walk out that door with me. Tyler was now in the past, while I was in the present. I shook my head and erased all thoughts of Tyler. Today was my first day at work and I should be excited. I smiled and started off to my new job.
