Chapter Nine

The next week passed by fast as I settled into the routine of work. Derek was a really nice guy and I learnt more about him every day. I had found out he was 27, single and lived about five minutes away from my apartment so he was able to walk me home every night. Derek came from Tauranga (a city about three hours south of Auckland) but moved to Auckland eight years ago to study at the University of Auckland.

Tyler and myself had also been growing closer the past week. Tyler was always at home when I got home and he always had a dinner ready. Of course, they were always store bought because he did not want to have a repeat performance of the bacon. Tyler's Mum lived in Auckland, just half an hour out of the city so she ocassionally came over but of course I could never meet her because of the time difference. Tyler's Dad had passed away a couple of years ago and with Tyler's sister also having moved out of home, Tyler's Mum gets lonely alot and that's why she visits Tyler alot. Tyler had recently broken up with his long term girlfriend because she had been cheating on him with his best friend. When I heard this, I really could not believe it. Anyone should think that Tyler was enough! Tyler said he was supposed to move into our apartment with her but of course that fell through. Tyler said he was pretty upset by it, but slowly he's starting to forget her. Tyler was such a great person, I can't believe anyone would ever cheat on him. That girl sure was crazy.  Anyway back to the story.

"Ok Rose, next week is all planned ot and it is now Friday so let's go have dinner together" I looked up in surprise,

"Uh...actually" I was thinking about Tyler at home, waiting with his store bought dinner.

"Don't tell that you already have a date?"

"Well...no..."

"Ok great, let's go" Derek grabbed my hand and led me out the door. Well, I guess Tyler can survive one night without me, right? Derek took me to a fancy steak and seafood restaurant which made me feel a little uncomfortable but I hid it.

"Let's have a bottle of wine to celebrate the end of the week!" Derek ordered a bottle of champagne and I cringed inside. I had yet to receive my first pay so I was a little low on cash. As if he could read my mind, he grinned,

"Don't worry, tonight's on me!"

"No it's ok I-"

"Bah bah bah!" Derek said, holding up his hand to cut me off, "You still haven't received your first pay and this is a thanks for becoming my assistant teacher. Now, cheers" WIth that we raised our glasses and clinked them together. I smiled, Derek really was a nice guy.

By the time I got home, I was a little tipsy. After dinner, Derek insisted that we go to a bar and so now it was eleven p.m. and I felt very good,

"Thank you for tonight, Derek" I said pulling out my keys,

"It was my pleasure. Would you mind if I came in?" My heart dropped in my chest. So he was one of those guys huh?

"Actually I'm going to be going straight to sleep so..." I left it hanging, hoping he got the hint.

"It's ok, I can watch you" I gave him a weird look so he laughed, "Just kidding. Goodnight Rose"

"Goodnight Derek" I quickly walked inside and closed the door. I really hope he just meant he wanted to drink more or something. Shaking the negative thoughts out of my head, I removed my shoes and walked into the lounge to see Tyler on the couch, watching T.V.

"Hey Tyler" I flopped down next to him, wondering what he was seeing.

"Hey Rose, you're a bit late tonight"

"Yeah, Derek and I went to dinner to celebrate my first week" I saw a flash of emotion pass Tyler's face but couldn't place it before he arranged it back to normal.

"That's good. Anyway, it's a bit late so I'm going to bed. If you're still hungry, I cooked you some dinner and stuck it in the fridge"

"Wait, you-" I started but Tyler had already shut his bedroom door, cutting me off. Tyler cooked? I went to the fridge and saw Tyler had made corned beef, mashed potatoes and peas. My heart tugged and then guilt washed over me. I mentioned on Wednesday that that was my favourite dinner of all time. There was a card on top of the glad wrapped dinner,

'My Mum helped me cook this...it was much easier than I thought it would be! I hope you enjoy it'

I felt so guilty now. Tyler had cooked my favourite dinner and I had gone out with Derek. I wish I could have at least called him to tell him that I  was going out for dinner. I closed the fridge and walked back ato my room, the guilt heavy on my heart.

The next morning I woke up early, showered and then walked into the kitchen, determined to make it up to Tyler. Tyler loved pancakes, so I was going to make pancakes covered in strawberries and cream. Just as I finished, Tyler walked in wearing his boxers and singlet, which never ceased to make me drool.

"Wow! Strawberry pancakes!" Tyler's eyes lit up and he quickly sat down at the counter, looking at me excitedly. I laughed,

"You're like a little boy on Christmas day!" I handed him his plates with a knife and fork and he quickly dug in, "I felt guilty about last night so I wanted to make it up to you" Tyler grinned,

"I need to make you feel guilty more often! These are great" I smiled, it seemed like he had forgiven me. Just before I was about to start on my own pancakes, the doorbell rang.

"I wonder what time period this person is from. Let's both go and see who can see them" So with that we both walked to the front door. I opened the door and my mouth fell open in shock. Tyler was looking around then turned to see my face,

"Rose? Are you ok? Who is it?"

"It's you"

Dun dun dun! So how was it guys? Sorry I haven't uploaded for a while...I had written another chapter where they had a fight but I didn't like it so I rewrote it. This one is much better I think! Also now I am now in Australia, visiting my parents, so for the next two weeks I might be slow uploading...please be patient!!
