"Mr. Maldonado! Mr. Maldonado!" I heard from the distance. I glimpse over my right and I notice somebody waving at me. He was a white blonde haired gentlemen with glasses and a thick mustache. He was wearing suit and calling my name so I walked towards him and we greet.
-"My name is Roger Green. Welcome to Birmingham."
-"Thank you so much."
-"Are you hungry?"
-"Just a little bit"-I was starving.-
-"Well, there's a great restaurant in town I want to take you. Plus there's people I want you to meet."
Great!-I thought. When you're in an airplane all day you get tired especially if you're not used to travel. Now I have meet people I don't know and be polite. All I want to do is grab me a burger somewhere go to the hotel and sleep.
We got in his truck and left the airport.
-"So. You're from L.A."
-"Yes, Sir."
-"Don't call me Sir. My name is Roger so just call me Roger." He smiled.
-"OK."
While he was driving and talking about the company. I was just looking outside the window. This place was so different. Everything seems so simple and humble. I realize there was a bunch of white wood houses with old brown roof shingles. Also small business like warehouses, stores and small industrial building. Suddenly, we went into what it looks like an old downtown area surrounding by old buildings, narrow streets and train tracks.
Mr. Roger parked by a small white building. We walked to the front and I saw two ladies; one of them with a red bump up wavy hair, black eyes and glasses. She was in her late 30's. And another lady with straight blonde hair, green eyes and a super shinning smile. The lady was in her mid 20's and she's beautiful. Clear and smooth skin, thin blonde eyebrows and small lips. This girl just has the perfect face. She was wearing a blue business shirt with black pants.
-"Carlos I want to introduce to you Mrs. Sharon, she will be your assistant."
-"Damn! The ugly one is my assistant" I said to myself while smiling. I extend my hand "Nice to meet you."
-She giggles "Nice to meet you too."
-"And this beautiful young lady over here." He puts his hand over her shoulder. "It's my beautiful daughter Taryn and she's our staffing coordinator."
- I extend my hand to her. "Nice to meet you Taryn. Carlos Maldonado."
-She smiled and shook my hand with delicacy. "Nice to meet you Carlos."
-"Well let's go in." Said Roger.
We when inside to this cafe-restaurant with a bar in the middle. The restaurant had a dark atmosphere with blackboards everywhere hanging on the walls. The blackboards have written messages with bright colors. There were also a bunch of posters and traffic signs stick on the walls. We sat down and the waitress hand us the menu. I looked through the menu and realize this was BBQ place. After two minutes the waitress came back and Mrs. Sharon orders BBQ ribs. The waitress turn to Taryn and she said;
-"I want a pulled pork plate with baked beans, mac and cheese and a sweet tea."
Mr. Roger place his order and them the waitress ask for my order but I was undecided so I told her; "I want the same thing she ordered"- while pointing at Taryn.
Mr. Roger talked the company. The waitress brought out drinks and, I didn't even know which drink I order or Taryn order. I start sipping on my drink and stop, then I zip again. "Mm not bad" I thought.
-"Oh my God!" Mrs. Sharon look at me and open her mouth wide. "Mr. Carlos I'm sorry for interrupting but; can you put your drink right there?" While she points to the middle of the table.
-"Hmm, sure." I put the drink right in the middle of the table.
-"What's going on Sharon?" Said Mr. Roger.
-"Just give me one minute." She replied.
Mrs. Sharon reach her purse and took out her cellphone. "One minute." A flashing light came out of the cellphone. Taryn opened her beautiful eyes wide. "I'm sorry I must tell Tamara about this because both of us have this crazy theory that Latinos don't like sweet tea"-Taryn opened her eyes even wider-. "But now I have evidence proving that we were wrong, considering that you're Hispanic and you're drinking sweet tea."
-"I love sweet tea. I have been drinking it my whole life" That statement was a complete lie.
After all that incident with the tea. Mr. Roger tried to get back on business and he keep talking about the company and what everybody else do in the company. I was trying to look at him but the beauty right beside him was a big distraction. The waitress brought the food. Once she finished putting all the plates on the table Mr. Roger told her; "Thank you ma'am." Taryn and Mrs. Sharon also replied the same words. I gave them a crazy side glance but, they didn't notice.
Not to long after eat and the waitress came back and brought refills. She served the refills and everyone replies; "Thank you ma'am." I was thinking; "Why everybody is calling this girl, man. I don't get it. Do this people know something about this girl that I don't? I mean because she looks good and she's feminine." I finished my meal because it was delicious and I was starving.
We were all talking getting to know each other better. I told them a little bit about my background, my family and where I came from. For some reason they were a little surprise because I didn't know any movie start or seen one in person before. The waitress came back to pick out our plates and clear the table. Everybody was thankful with her on their own way. I thought that everything was cool and she didn't seem to have any problem with people referring to her as "man". So I look at her and I told her; "Thank you, man." She gave that crazy side glance I used early and everybody in the table was staring at each other but nobody said anything.
