Finch sucks in a breath when she sees the castle. I also let out a small gasp.

The castle has been decorated for mourning. I never went outside-heck, I never left the library-in the past two months, never saw the locked doors or the closed gates, never saw the black drapes blocking most of the windows. The castle-my home-looks empty and barren and-

"What about the people?" Finch asks, yanking me out of my thoughts. "Those who relied on the King for laws and protection? If the King is dead and Angel's asleep, are you ruling over them?"

The people. I didn't think about them, never thought to find a temporary regent. I didn't do anything of the sort. I should've been-as Princess, I should've been-no. I was supposed to be caring for the people and helping Angel. And organizing Father's funeral. No, I did organize his funeral. And do a few things to help out the kingdom. But...I've ran away.

"You're the Queen Regent now, aren't you?" asks Finch quietly. "Come on Devil. Let's figure out what you've forgotten about. I can explore Angel's room if you want."

I bite my lip. I'm only sixteen years old! I don't know what to do. I don't know what I should be doing. I know very little.

"Come on Finch," I say softly. "Let's go inside."

The two of us head up towards the gates. One of the guards comes out and calls out, "Halt! Name and order of business?"

I draw myself up to my full height. "Princess Devil, sir. And company."

The guard looks at me, then nods. The gates open. Finch and I enter the courtyard.

"Dee," says Finch. "Look."

I follow her gaze. She's looking at a tower.

The Rose Tower.

When Mom was a little girl, she loved roses. Of course, as a poor servant she had little influence over the palace affairs. However she did plant roses at the base of the tower and cared for them. I guess vines had been growing in that area, because the tower is covered in vines. And the roses grow tall and proud. The tower pretty much juts out of a patch of roses.

No one can get inside the Rose Tower unless they take an underground tunnel leading to the Tower.

So why can I see movement?
