Chapter 16: Neverland

[Hitori POV]

"W-well, I'll be off." I shifted my school bag, opening the door.

"Have a safe day, Hitori-chan!"

"See you after school, Hitori!"

"You've got this, Onee-chan!" My family members were excited as I left. I wasn't.

I closed the door behind me.

It finally happened. I really was a high schooler now. Six years of elementary and three years of middle school flew by.

I had friends, a (mostly) successful Ohtube channel, a new style, and did I say, friends? The Hitori from three years ago wouldn't even recognize me. I was on a whole other level. And yet—today felt like a hollow victory.

I looked up. The sun was painfully bright, indifferent to my concerns. I turned on my phone to check my reflection.

"..." A pleasant smile met my gaze. I could do this. We were all first-years. I looked fine. I just had to walk in and introduce myself. I had done it countless times last year, but mainly because of—

My smile strained, buckling under pressure...Not today, Hitori. The Unlikely Duet was...over.

"Alright!" I psyched myself up, slapping my face. I started walking to school.

"Hey, Hitori-san!" Rounding a corner, I found a familiar face, her brown hair easy to spot.

"Kaori-san." I waved. It was Orimoto Kaori, my friend and former classmate. That's weird. We never said anything about meeting today. I wasn't complaining, though. The more allies, the better.

"Let's get going to Shuka!" She grabbed my hand.

"S-sure." I reluctantly agreed, hoping no one noticed my blushing. High school debut, here we come!
