It was cold. Not 'oh, Jack Frost nipping at your nose' cold, but four-layers, set-yourself-on-fire cold. It was freezing, basically, but it was windy so it felt colder, which really seemed impossible at the time.

He hated winter for a reason. The only thing he hated more than winter was Felix.

Felix loved the cold. It was probably their favorite thing in the whole world. He couldn't stand it. Never could. Felix, the stupid pixie, liked to say that he'd been born from flowers, which fled as soon as the first frost hit.

He really hated Felix.

On days that he really, simply couldn't stand the pixie, they amended their statement to say that he'd been born of fire, which hated the cold so much that it destroyed it.

Felix failed to mention that once fire had warmed the ice and snow around it, it would be put out because of its own actions of hatred.

That was the way he was: full of so much hatred that it would eventually destroy him.

He rubbed his arms, cursing Felix's lateness. The pixie made this a habit, and he often thought about creating some sort of punishment for all the tardiness Felix seemed to take pride in. He couldn't tear the pixie's wings off; that would only make the pixie even later. Maybe he could break one of Felix's legs. You didn't need legs to fly, did you?

A blur of soft blue darted into his vision and alighted on his nose. He scowled, slapping at the pixie with a gloved hand.

"Geez, you're pissy today." The pixie buzzed around his head. He wished Felix would calm down.

"She's still out there." A simple statement, though it meant something decidedly not simple.

Felix brushed it off.

"Yeah, yeah I know. Next your gonna tell me that if we don't catch her soon, she's going to ruin all your plans."

He didn't respond. His silence was answer enough.

"Look, maybe you just need to do some of the work yourself. Can't trust the hired muscle to do everything."

He held out his hand for Felix to land on. The pixie did.

"Kings," he said, "do not do the work."

He flicked his hand, sending Felix into the air.

"Find me someone more competent this time! I didn't become king just so a child could take away my throne!"

Felix hovered in front of his face.

"Might want to pull the stick outta your ass, 'your highness'"

With that, the pixie was off.

He turned and began the walk back to the castle.
