A bit later Jack finally decides to park his car and I get out before it even comes to stop. I look around to see whether I recognise the place from somewhere but I have absolutely no idea where we are. We have left the city and driven roughly towards Baltimore and that's all I know. While Jack is turning the motor off and searching the burritos on the backseat, I investigate our surroundings.
The air smells fresh and is nowhere near the sweet scent of the city, furthermore I'm able to spot a little forest in the distance. We are standing on some kind of field which seems to be going on for miles and a few metres away from our parking lot the water of a little river is sparkling in the moonlight. I look up to the sky, I haven't even noticed that the sun set while we were driving in the car and laughing about stories we told each other. The night is as beautiful as you'd expect it to be at a place like this one, the moon is shining brightly and thousands of stars are twinkling next to it. I can feel Jack taking my hand, I turn around and he smiles at me.
"This is amazing" I aspirate and look up to the stars again. "How did you get to know this place?"
"My family went here for little trips on the weekends when I was a kid, we used to stay here all day and have the times of our lives. And I thought 'Why not show all of this to my amazing girlfriend?' " He kisses my cheek, not letting go of my hand for a second. "Plus we have burritos and they deserve to be eaten at a nice location."
"True" I agree and let out a small laugh. "Thank you for taking me here, Jack."
"I can't think of anybody else who I'd want to share this memory with." He replies. "And now follow me, I think I know where we should eat our dessert!"
We wander around the river until Jack puts down the blanket he brought with him. He lets me choose where I want to sit and eventually sits down next to me, fetching the burritos.
"Burrito?" He asks me and shows me the two of them.
"Burrito." I say and grab one. I have to admit I have a thing for burritos.
"Maybe burrito will be our always." Jack suddenly remarks and grins.
"Oh no you didn't" I honestly don't know what to say. My boyfriend has just quoted The Fault In Our Stars, except for the burrito part of course.
"Yes I did" He laughs and takes a huge bite. "But come on, I know you like the idea of burrito being our always."
"Well, I like burritos and I like you so... you aren't that wrong" I smirk and start to eat my burrito as well. "But why do you know The Fault In Our Stars? I'm sure you didn't read it and I thought you're more of a Disney or action film guy."
"And I thought you said I like surprising you tonight, didn't you? I guess this is one of those surprises" He explains between swallowing a burrito part and attacking the next one. "Besides, Shailene Woodley is great."
"And with great you mean hot, right?" I ask and he blushes. It's really hard not to laugh right now. "It's okay Jacko, she is hot. But I prefer Jennifer Lawrence, she is a goddess!"
"Hmm" Jack hums in agreement, not being able to speak because it seems like he was so excited about his food that he's just stuffed his mouth with the half of his burrito that was still left.
We both stay silent until I have finished eating, too, and we lay down on the blanket so we can face the stars.
"You told me something about your childhood earlier, now it's my turn." I break the silence, even though it's been one of those nice and comfortable silences again. "As a kid I was obsessed with the moon and the stars, basically with everything related to space. And to be honest, I still am. During warm summer nights when everybody else in the house had already been asleep, I would be the one sneaking outside and laying down somewhere in our garden so I could watch the night sky for hours. Maybe that's why I'm enjoying right now so much." Jack takes my hand again and looks at me with his deep brown eyes but I am still staring at the stars. "You know... I've always wanted to escape this planet at some point and search for a new one, a place where all of my problems wouldn't be important anymore. When I look up to the stars I don't simply see some pretty glowing celestial bodies - I see a place where everything makes sense. A place that goes on till infinity and where I can forget the whole world, at least for a few seconds. A place where I can be myself without getting judged for it." The last sentences came out as whisper, perhaps because I'm too stunned from the stars and my idea.
"If you want me to, I can be that place for you" Jack offers and I direct my vision at him again.
"What?" I try to dig deeper quietly. "Really?"
"I can be that place for you" He repeats. "When I'm with you it feels like everything makes sense and I forget the whole world because all that matters in that time is you and me, all that matters is us. I promise you that you can always be yourself around me and everybody who tries to judge or change you has to deal with me, telling them how incredibly wrong they are. I want to make you feel safe when we're together. I want to be your escape from this planet. I want to be your personal night sky."
I can't think of a better way to respond so I decide to go for the easiest one - I kiss him. I place my hands around his neck and pull him closer to me.
"Have I already told you how beautiful you are?" Jack says and plays with a streak of my hair.
"Stop it or I have to kiss you again!" I threaten him with a smile.
"I could live with that" He grins and leans in, I happily return his kiss.
"You know what? This was definitely the best date ever in the history of best dates." I state and he laughs.
"I'm glad my attempts to please you were successful." He gives me a kiss on the forehead.
"They sure as hell were! And you were serious about you wanting to be my night sky?" I ask deliberately.
"I've never been more serious before and trust me, this has to say something." He assures me.
I snuggle up to him and sigh. "I wish we could stay here forever. Only you and me, looking at the stars and being happy."
"This would be perfect" He smiles and I can't help but kiss him again.
'Cause right now could last forever, just as long as I'm with you.
