Chapter 10

The Ruins

Thalia

***A small group of us trooped up one of the smallish hills that lead to a shortcut through a pocket of bushland. To my neutral reaction and Maceys not-so-neutral one, Kale accompanied us.

'There's a few Shipments I talked tah before,' he shrugged, after Macey nearly bit his head off for attempted stalking. 'I said I'd visit them, and this is thah quickest way there.'

Macey glared at him. I stood by and laughed my head off.

The day was very hot. The sun beat down our necks from its lofty position in the sky and a small heat haze snuggled close to the ground. Summer was well andtrulycoming, good bye Spring. The nights were still as chilly as ice, though.

More than half of the other girls in the group were shamelessly flirting with Kale, now that the presence of his girlfriend was gone from immediate view. I nevergot why so many girls tripped over their own feet for him. Yes, he was good looking, he was tall with broad shoulders, with big and vibrant blue eyes, blonde hair that always seemed to be gracefully messy, and of course, his 'amazing singing voice' to charm whoever he wanted. But I never saw any of these things myself, they had just been quoted to me by love struck girls in the crowd at concerts. To me he was just big shouldered, tall and awkward, with weirdly large eyes, blonde hair that could do with a comb and a voice that, granted, was okay, but meantthat I would always have to try to be better than the best at whatever I did musically.

Me being me, I would prefer other guys.

Oh, did I mention his eight pack? He had an eight pack.

Big whoop.

'I wish Carly would shut up!' hissed a very pissed off pixie. Macey shook her head, and continued to glare at the gaggle of preening, giggling and flirting girls that stood next to Kale like electrons around the nucleus of an atom out of the corner of her eye.

I agreed with her, and couldn't stop myself from laughing. The good mood in the pit of my stomach was stone set on multiplying into something that couldn't be contained.

'Is there a way tah stop them?' Kale asked me painfully, trudging over to me after successfully shaking one particularly clingy girl off his arm.

'Nowp,' I winked back at him. 'Gonna learn how tah deal with it.'

'Oh, thah joy...' he sighed through gritted teeth. 'Wish me luck!'

'No!' Macey winked, sounding very joking. Maybe my improved outlook on Kale was rubbing off onto her. The thought made me happy.

The clingy one reattached herself to Kales arm, laughing hysterically. He grinned at us helplessly, looking like he would gladly saw his arm off and sprint into the bush to be gone of her. The clingy one didn't seem to mind, either way. She would probably just keep his arm.

'So, Thalia?' a boy so tanned he seemed out of place with his russet red hair stepped over to me. 'Have yah thought 'bout thah party on thah weekend?'

Ah yes, that was Marcus, the one who had sent me a message about being free for the weekend.

'Yeah, I think so, there's nothin' impor'ant I have tah do,' I shrugged.

'That's great!' he grinned, making to pull out his Pocket from a compartment in his bag. Macey rolled her eyes and smiled behind my back.

'So Marcus, am I invited tah?' she pouted sadly.

'Well, duh, 'course yah ayre,' he chided playfully.
