Chapter Fourteen

Awakening

Thalia

I awoke with the dull morning sun the following day.

How many days had it been since that beginning?

Four. Four days since the first bombs were dropped.

I groaned, feeling the tenderness of newly electrified limbs steal through me.

Perfect. Just fucking perfect.

Every last bit about me was sore, tender and felt like it would just drop off at any given moment.

A bird chirped.

That one, lone natural sound instantly made me pay attention to what lay around me.

Trees.

Before any further observations could be made, every last memory and sensation from last night came rushing back in one all engulfing tirade.

The flames.

The smell.

The smoke.

Death lay reeking in the smog laced air, choking and tangling itself firmly in everything, while greedy, whispering flames stole away the last signs of life, nibbling at flesh and skin and bone with fangs of inferno.

By my own sob that escaped, I was brought back into the reality.

Trees.

A light breeze puffed past importantly, rustling tendrils that hung down lazily from the canopy. It would have looked almost tranquil, peaceful... albeit the long blackened scorch leading a clear path back to wherever we had come from... or were going to...

'Hey look, it's awake.'

I turned painfully to the sound.

Seven drones stared at me, expressions revealing that I had been the first Naturesse they had ever seen. Or seen alive.

The thought caused another stupefying moment of remembrance of flames.

'Go on, make it sleep again,' one jeered, flipping his black helmet, so it covered any facial features that were once open to me.

The obvious impromptu leader stepped forward delicately, taser in hand.

Was that just it? A taser was their weapon of choice?

It made sense. Small, portable and it did the job.

Too well.

Pain ripped joyfully through me, and I took a millisecond to be relived that while it felt like my veins were on fire, I could no longer remember any sensations of the real flames.

At least for a time.

Light suddenly sputtered into my eyes, forcing them to open in the most undignified manner.

My pupils dilated to the point where they were only pin pricks, and outlines of people look hold in my vision.

'Ah good, it's alive.' Whoever they were, they sounded offhand. 'Looked almighty dead to me.'
